Calcasieu Lake, Louisiana

A friend and I went fishing in Calcasieum Lake in Louisiana today (9/11/04). The procedure here is to first FIND the fish with either bait or artificials and then switch to flies. The finding was the hard part...we were looking redfish and speckled trout. Calcasieu is alarge relatively shallow estuarine lake. There were n o birds working anywhere we saw. We tried lots of tried and true places, but never caught but one speckled trout, and that was an 1/8" short of the 12" limit size. We caught fish, just not what we were looking for, and everything was spotty. We landed hardf head catfish (what nuisance!), a stingray, Atlantic croaker, sheepshead, and ladyfish...just couldn't fiond the specks and reds. while we taking my friends boat out, another angleer asked if we had found water clear enough to flyfish (we had, but seemingly with no fish). He had killed them Monday on the fly rod, but now was having trouble finding clean water. One of my firends went fishing in one of the local saltwater marshes this morning (in a boat equipped to go in 6" of water, they had 14" this morning). They managed to hook up with a lot of reds. Largest on a fly was 14 lbs.

As the fall progresses, fishing should only get better through about mid-November. Then there's about a month and a half slow period, but where you fish has to change a bit. Just couldn't find the reds & specks Saturday...about the only fish normally resident in Calcasieu we didn't atch were redfish, floundr and Atlantic needlefish. This may because we are just now only getting to "normal" salinities. In May and June we had record rainfall here and we've been all summer recovering.
