head cement

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any thoughts about water based head cement ? Haven't tried it but I'm really tired of finding thick, gooey traditional cement everyother time I sit down to tie.

Loon Products makes a water based head cement which I tried once. It was too thin to suit me so I tried Loon Hard Head which is also water based only thicker. By adding a few drops at a time it finally became what I was after. Now I use it as a head cement and as a clear coat for some of my poppers. However, it can thicken over time just like the regular head cement. The stuff has a limited shelf life too... about a year. So I don't know whether there is a good solution to the thickening problem. However, the Hard Head can be thinned with water and has a less bothersome smell than some cements and their thinners.

I use Minwax Polycrylic, low smell and good seal, now a shine build up but because it seals and penetrates great you can run an over cot of something like Sally's for a great shine.

Somewhere I read that water-based head cement was recommended for flies with that teeny-tiny plastic tubing like Liquid Lace. I suppose all of the solvents in the regular kind could melt/dissolve the plastic. I bought some Liquid Lace and some Loon Water-Based Head Cement a while back, but I haven't gotten around to tying anything with either of them.
