Subsitute for Coyote

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone has found a suitable subsitution for Coyote fur? If I do not have to run to the store that would be great.

Thanks!

I don't know.... I have a few coyote skins from my heavy predator hunting days, and coyotes have a huge range of tints and colors, even on one critter. I've shot them almost blonde, almost red, one almost but not really black, and a bunch of "normal" ones. A good skin has very silky and long guard hairs.

About the best substitute I could think of is German Shepherd!

I would think Collie would be a better substitute than German Shepherd.

I have a good supply of coyote tails, and like to tie with it, but don't know of any popular patterns that specify it. I like it for tying crayfish patterns, and I tie hair jigs with it.

Slacker, what pattern are you tying that you need a substitute?

I think the backside of some bucktails- the brown or dark section might be a suitable substitute in a pinch. The problem is you don't have other lighter hairs. Maybe pair it with some craft fur or lighter hair you have laying around. What's the pattern?

Thanks for the suggestions but I think I will avoid the domestic fur ideas.....

Appartently coyote makes one meaty steamer when tied with a couple of wings of deer hair. Head like a muddler minnow. The fly is calld the Sirloin and it makes quite a meal. Hence the name.

Thanks for the tip. I may try that. Have not ever even looked for coyote at the local store before they may have it. If not I will certainly tie a few with squirrel. I'll let you know how it tuns out.......

Thanks!

OK, I found the pattern on the internet. Meaty is right!

Squirrel will work, but I don't think it will give the same bulky look, as it's more straight fibered. The barring would look good, I've used it on Muddlers.

Bucktail would work too, but won't give the same bulky look either I don't believe, unless you tie it heavy, and I think you would have to be careful you don't make it too buoyant with bucktail.

Badger body would be a good substitute, black or brown bear body would also work for a dark version. Red Fox body or tail would be a good substitute, but you would likely have to thin down the underfur, or it will mat up when wet. You could try using N. American Opossum body, except it's more white than tan, with pronounced black tips. Might be a nice affect though.

You may have a hard time finding the coyote belly hair that the pattern calls for anyway, unless you purchase a whole hide. Tails are more readily available, and should work just fine if you decide to stick with coyote. :)

Thanks CharlaineC but I actually pick some up at the local fly shop on Friday. I think the best news is that my sons winter jacket is safe.

Going to tie up some Sirloins tonight!
