NJFlyMAn 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2010 lets see types of flies i want to tie, well i will mainly be trout fishing and a little bit of fishing on lakes, so what patterns would that be? I would start off with the deadly seven... 1. Woolly bugger 2. Pheasant tail 3. Hare's ear 4. Zebra midge 5. Disco Midge 6. Scud Nymphs 7. Caddisfly nymphs
RoaringForkFisher 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2010 sounds great, can't wait to tie a pheasant tail, oh and one last question, can you still tie good flies on just a super AA from js fly fishing? is it just harder?
utyer 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2010 Any vise that will hold a hook firmly will allow you to tie flies. So yes, the AA would work fine for a while. If you want an inexpensive vise, look at this one from Bass Pro. it comes with 3 jaws so it will take you a while to wear out all three sets. The biggest difference in cheap imported (asian) vises, and the better quality vises from the US, and Europe, is in the quality of the steel in the jaws. Different vises have different features like ajustable head angles, rotating the hook, easy adjustments for different hook sizes etc. The Bass Pro vise will rotate, and ajust the head angle, you won't find another inexpensive vise for less. Stepping up to a Griffin, or Danvise will give you a vise that could last for years. Take RRSS advise on the danvise. It sounds to me like you want to get going as inespensively as you can, and still have something worth tying on. The Bass Pro vise would be my recommendation in that case. Then get one good pair of scissors, and a ceramic bobbin. Many very good fly tyers use NO vise at all, remember skill comes from the tyer, not the tool. Good tools will help, but they won't improve your skills. Only you can do that.

JohnP 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2010 J. Stockard is a great place to order from. The quality of materials is first-rate and the service can't be beat. Plus they are the sponsor of this fine site. Most trout flies are tied on hooks size 8 to 18. It is confusing, I know, but if you can settle on a dozen or so proven patterns for your area you want to tie, then buy the materials for those, you will be off to a good start. In general, the gold-ribbed hare's ear and pheasant tail are excellent nymphs that imitate a wide variety of trout food and catch a lot of fish every year. For dry flies, the Adams and the elk hair caddis are widely used and, again, imitate a lot of different types of bugs the fish feed on. Woolly buggers are also excellent flies and catch a variety of fish in a variety of conditions. If you are just learning to tie, I would strongly recommend you take a class. There are also excellent videos available through this Web site and on Youtube. The books that have been mentioned are also excellent resources. Good luck and have fun. NJFlyMAn 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2010 Wow.. Ok,, I think the best thing for you to do is look up a fly pattern that you like and then buy the stuff to make that pattern.. Most people will include a recipe for the materials that one would need to make the fly.. They even list the hook and size..
clarkii 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2010 get the book NJFlyMAn suggested- Essential Trout Flies- by Dave Hughes- very good place to start! begin tyin' flies as shown in the book-and buyin' materials as needed... really the best way to get started is jump in w/ both feet! another book that looks like it would be great is Leeson/Schollmeyer's- Benchside Introduction To Fly Tying. , clarkii.
