navigator37 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2010 Recently, I ran out of lead wrap for the underbody of my flies. I came across some marked down lead core trolling line at a fishing store and wondered if it would work for adding some weight to my flies when needed. I bought a spool and tried it out. It turned out to be better than most lead wrap I have ever used. It is stronger than the standard stuff, soft, and wraps better without breaking very easily. Cut as 6 inch strip and work the end of the lead out of the nylon. Then just pinch the nylon covering below and slowly pull the lead core out. Comes out easily. So I now have 100 yards of the stuff. Won't need anymore for a long time.
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2010 Good tip! Although, I have plenty of lead wire, I also have a couple of spools of lead core, which I use to make sinking leaders, I never thought to use the lead core wire for tying.
Jeremy Parker 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2010 Been doing this for years, why buy it though? Most guys that use lead core line only use the line for a couple of years and replace it! My name is in at a couple of tackle shops and I know which friends use leadcore so the supply is endless. The braided casing is also great for Mayflies, damsel flies etc........ Blessings, Jeremy
ChuckingFluff 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 I have the same one but the 30lb line. I leave the nylon on when doing big flies. Another good supplier is your dentist. Ask them to keep the lead plates from the xrays, there great for building up bodies.
