Got a little over two weeks to get your flies in so far I have not seen any other than my own.

So how are we doing folks? I've 3 of my flies done and am going on vacation next week so I should finish them up then.

June 21 is the date.

First three in get a return surprise with their flies. May come with them or be shipped separate but you'll get it.

Got my, Allen Lite Poppers done and boxed. I'll make it to the post office tomorrow or Monday and send them on their way. These aren't fancy or bullet proof but they are easy to tie, light weight, and very effective. I've casted the 1/0 size on my 4wt. Now, you can make them more durable with a coat of 2-ton epoxy but they will be heavier and not float as high, although they will still pop entirely well enough to cause a ruckus on the surface.

Great looking poppers. Are those pre-formed popper bodies or did you make them yourself?

Thanks, they are Comel styrofoam floats cut in half and then a little of the small end taken off as well. Sometimes I stop up the hole, on these, I left the line/peg hole open. Very tough but lighweight bugs and cheap; down here you get 5 floats in a bag for a buck from Wal-Mart, which makes 10 heads.

I'll go back and edit to add the recipe.

very cool  I assume you use a dremel to hollow out the face a little. Do you use a Xacto knife to cut the foam, or just a regular knife?

I do use a dremel but you really really don't have to cup the face any; cupping the face on a popper is just one of those habits I've been in. I think it stems from growing up throwing commercial poppers that all have cupped faces. I've actually made poppers with no cup and they pop just fine. But, yes, I use a rounded end metal cutting bit on my dremel; I find the stone grinding wheel gets clogged and smooth to quickly.

You can use an xacto but I prefer the xacto hobby saw or a hacksaw blade. That foam is pretty tough stuff, I'll sometimes fine tune the slant face with a straight razor or sand paper on a flat hard surface.

Just a note here on the popper tails: The tails may be to long on these saltwater poppers - let me explain.

I've been using the EP fibers on many of my freshwater bugs where I tie a short length of fibers in for a tail and add rubber/silicone for length. They cast nice, lay in the water nice, no fowling problems and catch fish.

That is why I used those fibers on these saltwater poppers and some for myself. Well, I fished one today that I painted with enamel paint and tied in a single length EP fiber tail. I was ticked to find that the single length tail wrapped down in and around the hook bend. I trimmed it shorter and that seemed to help.

That being said, the ones I've made for the swap are trimmed with a taper and are a little shorter than the one I fished today so I hope you don't have any trouble with it. If you do, try trimming the tail shorter. If it still gives you trouble, let me know and I'll send you a replacement.

Sorry,

Kirk

Just got back from a whirlwind tour of the Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona, mail was delivered today and my daughter told me that I have four packages waiting on me at the house. By the names and addresses on the packages it appears that I received flies from Kirk Dietrich, AndyDoc, Agn54 and FlatzFatz I will double check them when I get home this evening. Will let everyone know tomorrow what is here for sure.

How are the rest of us doing? We have one week left to get them tied and in the mail. PM me or drop a note her to let me know how we are doing. I will be sending a pm to each and everyone of us that do not have flies in after I verify what I have.

Its crunch time folks lets get em done and on the way :)

Robert,

For some reason I can't remeber if I added toe tags to my flies. If not then I apologize. Just in case everyone, the brown shrimp gurglers are from me.
