WHAT HOOK EYE ANGLE

Recommended Posts

In a few circumstances it can make a difference, but it is generally accepted that turned-down, straight, or turned-up doesn't matter a whole lot.

If you do a search in the forum for those terms, you'll get links to quite a few discussions about it.

WHAT AFFECT DOES THE ANGLE OF THE EYE ON A HOOK HAVE ON THE ACTION OF A GIVEN FLY ??

For dries, a down eye will get the tippet near the fly to sink so it won't make a mark in the surface film. Most use down eye hooks for dries these days, although for tradtional dries the up eye hook is used for some reason, probably for authenticity. Generally though, a down eye hook is probably best.

I also use the down-turned eye on dries, until I get into the size 20's and smaller. At that point, hook gap becomes critical, and every minute measurement counts. I start using straight eyed hooks when I get down in the 20's.

A good point.

i've been using straight eye hooks (dai riki 125)- on some dry parachutes/emerger type flies and larger dries like stimulators (tmc 2312)- not sure it makes much difference on the water- but, i like the finished look better.

most of my other dries have down eye hooks...

cheers,
