JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2010 Went to Cabela's in Hamburg Pa today and as usual, bought way more stuff than I intended. Discovered upon checkout that they stopped offering their discount to active/retired military "about a month ago." THAT SUCKS, and I don't know what the agenda is. No way they ever lost a penny by doing that, because just like me, most people end up buying more shizz than they went in for. It was just a good selling point knowing they supported troops that way. Bass Pro and Gander do still support the troops with a discount. I talked with customer service and of course they didn't know why. Over the years I've spent thousands of dollars at Cabela's, and when I was a Unit Commander, we spent money there for gear with their Government Sales program. Until I get a reason from them, I'll have to abstain from spending any more of my money there.

longears 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2010 Why not just support your local fly shop? They probably have much more to offer you and without the corporate hoopla... What do you think you're going to have once all of the little guys shut their doors?
BigDaddyHub 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2010 Cabela's offers more for the total outdoorsman, whereas my local flyshop on sells flyfishing gear.... Sometimes a guy like me likes being able to buy all thier turkey, deer, duck hunting supplies in the same place I buy lead eyes. But that's not the point of this thread. Cabela's may be shooting themselves in the foot with this one, Joel. I gotta say, it's disappointing. And you're right, having worked retail for years, I can assure you they're not hurting thier bottom line by offering discounts to exclusive groups like the military. JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2010 I talked with a corporate Customer Service rep yesterday from Cabela's HQ. He assured me that is NOT THE CABELA'S POLICY across the business. He said it is up to the management of each store to set programs such as this- SO IT IS THE HAMBURG PA STORE ONLY as far as I know now. It also happens to be their largest store. I will be calling there today, to get an answer. There are a HELL of a lot of military folks in the area who will be interested to know what this manager's intentions are. LongEars, BDH summed it up. JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2010 610-929-7001, Bruce Biedenharn, store manager The general number to the store, customer service, is 610-929-7000. The Manager On Duty with whom I spoke today, told me that it WAS a "corporate decision" which contradicts what the Corporate Customer Service rep told me yesterday. He had no explanation for this, and I believe he was just passing on to me what he was told. He told me they decided to do a Quarterly weekend when they honor a discount for military and public safety personnel, but dropped the program as a daily thing. I was quite clear that I and many of my associates were very disappointed and the policy change implied a loss of support. Additionally, he could not tell me when the next "quarterly" time would be. I will be calling Mr. Biedenharn directly tomorrow. Did not get the chance today. So far, I'm still disappointed. Got to be clear that this applies ONLY to the Hamburg Pa retail store. As far as Cabela's web and mail order, this program has never been in effect because they have no way to verify anything; and I'm perfectly OK with that. I still think Cabela's gear is mostly great stuff. I feel that Mr. Biedenharn has made an unfortunate mistake trying to save a few pennies on the bottom line, which won't happen.
