waterloosunset 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2010 I want to split my 14/0 Sheer to make it finer for tying small flies neatly. Can I split the whole spool length in one go or do I need to do a little every time I start a fly? Any tips would be much appreciated.
arkle 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2010 Short lengths only I'm afraid, there are finer threads around. Uni do a 17/0 any several guy's split Moser's Power Silk as it's non twisted. There's a new thread out from Semperfli, haven't tried it yet though but the write up's seem positive. What size are you tying on, to need stuff so fine ? arkle 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2010 "Make less turns" absolutely agree, but make every turn count. That doesn't mean winding so tight that yoy end up bending the hook, but careful control of the tension at ALL times. You may need to adjust you bobbin holder legs for this as individual spools vary not only in size but the material they're made from & the amount of friction they impart on the holding legs. I'm mainly tying 16s and 18s but I like a very small whip finish invisible if possible. I also like to whip finish around parachute posts. I found gudebrod 10/0 great but they're not making it anymore. I find uni 17/0 lies too flat to make a tiny whip finish. Any suggestions?

Even a three turn whip finish is too bulky for me, probably because I'm too finicky!
whatfly 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2010 You could try Benecchi 12/0. Comparable to gudebrod 10/0, perhaps even better Cannot imagine why anyone would want to waste time splitting thread for flies as large as you are tying, but to each their own... Old Hat 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2010 I tie down to #22's and use Griffith's 14/O.
JRG 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2010 Ever try spider web???? I think I heard someone even splits that for small stuff.

Any suggestions? get some Caenis thread from JStockard. http://www.jsflyfishing.com/cgi-bin/item/T...nis-Thread.html it is 20 denier. Gnats use it for dental floss. If a 3-turn whip finish using this stuff is "too bulky" for you, get counseling.
arkle 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2010 If you go to www.deercreek.co.uk 1 of my fellow designers there is also a fellow countryman of yours, Andy Baird. If you go to the designers section, he's got a couple of links on there you may find worthwhile. Andy specializes in tying small patterns. Hans Wilennman, owner of the www.danica.com site also ties very small flies (32's!) & he splits 3 strands off power-silk & find that works the best, he's tried everything that comes out but that's still his favourite. waterloosunset 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2010 I really don't like single strand (monofilament) threads, that's what stops me using spiderweb or 20 denier uni caenis.
