Steve P 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2010 Just curious as to what hooks most of you out there use for klinkhammers?? I typically use a hook similar to the TMC 2488 that I have found looks just the same but is MUCH cheaper than the others and it works correctly with the fly. TitanFlies 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2010 I think it's the Partridge 15BNX, Fishy, but don't quote me on it. Anyways, that's what I use because it has a more extreme bend to it in comparison to its "grandparent" hook, the 15BN. I find that with the BNX, the thorax and abdomen penetrate the surface film easier.
Moscow 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2010 I have been using Daiichi 1270s (mostly #16 and #18) and putting a slight bend in the shank to imitate the shape of the Partridge 15BXN. They worked really well and I didn't have any breakage. But not leaving well enough alone, I decided to buy a couple packs of the 15BXNs in size #14 and #16 to try. I was disappointed in the hooks from a size stand point - they are really large for the sizing. The #16 look like #12 and similarly the #14s look even bigger. If I had known, I would have ordered them in 2 sizes smaller. They are a good quality hook but not what I expected size-wise so now they just sit in my tying bench. At 1/2X the price of the Partridge hooks, it's back to the Daiichis for me. Tim
TitanFlies 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2010 You bring up an excellent point, Moscow. If you're thinking about ordering the Partridge brand, I recommend the size 20s - they're more like 14s and 16s.
flyline64 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2010 I usually tie them in smaller sizes (to imitate size 12-18 mayflies); I use Tiemco 2487 and 2488 for those sizes. For larger sizes, I use the Tiemco 200R--sometimes as is, sometimes bending the hook about 1/3 way down the shank, which makes it closer to the Partridge Klinkhammer hooks.
