HOW Cape Fear Chapter 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2010 I know Im not very active on here do to having so many local forums I participate on. Its hard to keep up with them all. I have been looking for a crab pattern to use in the grass for reds. I have found some descent patterns but last night I found the one for me. I have tied this pattern using strands of yarn but I wasn't satisfied with the looks of it. EP fiber works great for this pattern. I cant wait to pole around in some flooded grass and drop this fly right in front of a Red.

agn54 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2010 Great looking crabs, I really like the 2 tone legs. I tie similar ones using Congo Hair, which I also prefer to yarn. I have seen them tied using blue grizzly hackles to imitate blue crabs. You should kill the reds with those.
saltydancindave 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2010 Nice ties & they'll catch the reds in the harbor, but most of the fly tyers in the fly fishing club usually only have a weedguard of 1 prong or 2 that extends to a little bit past the point of the hook so when the reds bite down it also moves down & out of the way; instead of the freshwater bass fly weedguard style, which may gather more weeds on the bottom of the flats than intended to as compared to topwater bass fly weedguards. I agree, I usually use the "V" weed guard or sometimes just a single strand of mono.
