Nor-Vise- Fine Point Jaw Conversion

Recommended Posts

Hey folks.

I have a Nor-Vise and enjoy using it. I am looking to buy the fine point jaw conversion for some small stuff (down to size 32)

Looking for some feedback from folks who use this jaw and have tied some tiny flies.

Thanks in advance.

JP

I have the fine point conversion, and I like it for small flies. I have tied down to size 32, and agree that the spinning feature isn't needed or used much on those smaller flies. I do use the rotation to apply hackle to my small flies.

I have it and use it, and like it very much....I put on the heavy jaw chucks and this aids in spinning not that I do much when going that small.

Only jaws I used til I got into striper fishing

Out of curiosity, I received some size 32 hooks in a batch of stuff I bought. they are like an 1/8" long with a 1/16" hook gap. What the heck do you catch with them, guppies???? How do you tie them on??? I can't even see an eye on the hook, are the just novelty items.

The pattern:

six turns of green 8/0 thread for the abdomen and a 4 turn whip finish of black 8/0 thread for the thorax and be careful not to crowd the hook eye  if there is one..

or is that too bulky?

Alternately:

Tie in a single hackle fiber with 16/0 thread and wrap forward 6 turns then form a dubbing loop but don't put anything in it as it will close up the hook gap. Twist the 2 strands of 16/0 together wrap forward with two half hitches and tease out micro fibers from the tread to form legs. Do this gently as if it is more than a small blur at the front of the hook, you most likely have cut the thread and must start over. A microscope helps with this tie though it isn't needed if you have 20/10 or better vision.

You can add a drop of your favorite head cement if you would like to turn the fly into a micro lady bug. Make sure that you hang the fly upside down while the cement dries or you loose your hook gap and have made a pointless fly. When using the glue meathod for making micro lady bugs be sure to glue the fly to your leader in the process otherewise the eye of the hook can be too hard to clean out as the point on most of the other flies in your box are too large to poke into the small/non existent eyes on the size 32 fly hook.

You fish these flies dry if you can find a leader that will not drag them down but most people just fish them wet........

The motto of the size 32 flyfisher... why fish barbless flies go for pointless.

In all seriousness though, do you actually fish these? and how? Do you tie the leader onto the hook when you tie the fly? All I can say is WOW.

Get yourself a copy of "Midge Magic". It shows the tiny stuff. :D To answer do I fish them? Yes sir. In WV on the Elk River. Have landed some nice fish on 32's and slightly larger flies using 10x tippet.

Thanks for the feed back folks.

I just said that I have tied down to size 32, they were for a swap, and I haven't fished them. I have tied and fished size 24 and 26 Tricos. Two weeks ago, I fished Spruce creek and was able to catch fish up to 16" on the Tricos. I fish a lot of size 20 and 22 midges both dry and wet, and I have caught fish over 20" on these.

My Trico tie:

Hook 24 or 26, thread 17/0

Two organza strands for tails, thread abdomen 10 or 12 organza strands for wings, Herl from a peacock wing for the thorax. Figure 8 wrap the herl around the wings twice.

I have some organza ribbon material, the cross fibers are thicker than the long fibers. I use the cross fibers on larger flies like an 18, and the small fibers for the size 24s and 26.

These are not easy to see on the water, but they do work at the right time and place.
