Njardar 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2010 You may want to do some reseach to see what works where you fish, then research patterns and pick ones that you feel comfortable with, then buy the material and tools. There are a number of substitutes for tools so be creative and have fun. And don't forget... ask a lot of questions here, these folks really know their stuff abd are very helpful. utyer 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2010 Unless you really have some background, I wouldn't recommend eBay. I have seen some very few good buys, and I mean a VERY few. There are a lot of good quality vises and tools on eBay, and they are usually priced pretty much at retail. Then there are a lot of inexpensive import vises also priced at or ABOVE what you can purchase these for from a reputable shop or Internet merchant. Buying a big "lot" of fly tying stuff can sometimes get you a whole assortment of good stuff, but unless you know what your looking at, it may not really be all that good or usefull. There is no need to break the bank, but you do need to do some research and ask some questions before you purchase. There are servicable vises out there for a little as $20.00 that will get you started. The other basic tools shouldn't set you back more than another $25.00. You need a good set of scissors, a bobbin, a whip finish tool, and hackle plier to start with. Do some research first, and then start shopping. Ask questions when you have some basic knowledge. You can get started for under $100, and then build materials as you find patterns that work for your area.
popping_parrish 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2010 Thanks for the advice i have been checking out e-bay for some time now i found a few kits starting at 20 that comes with a vise sissors and bobbin. and also a big selection of holesale feathers and materials for 10 or so dollers how do i know if they are worth it or not? i hate to keep bugging you peeps with what seems like easy questions. thanks :headbang:
utyer 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2010 Well that is a catch 22. If you post the link, and ask, you risk getting a lot of people looking and maybe bidding on anything good that you may find. Without looking at the same lot your looking at, nobody will be able to give you any good advise.
popping_parrish 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2010 Never thought of it like that maybe i need to find a few good friends i can trust not to out bid me that knows what to look for as a good deal. i cant wait to start tying i think in the long run it will save me money. i hate going out and buying all my flies and poppers from a hunting shop and so forth because thats all we pretty much have around here. It would also give me something to do when im sitting in the house and cant get to the water on those winter days.
Bryan Wright 0 Report post Posted September 13, 2010 This is what I just bought to get started: DanVise: http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/li...-box.jsp.form23 Tool Kit: http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pr...&hasJS=true Some Maribou: http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/li...h-box.jsp.form1 chanille: http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/li...h-box.jsp.form1 Black Thread and White Thread: http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/li...h-box.jsp.form1 Buck Tail Grab Bag: http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pr...&hasJS=true I bought all of this all at one time. So it was a little pricy and I bought a vise that is 85 bucks. you could easily go witha cheaper vise but I really wanted one that was a rotary vise. I also found on CraigsList a kit that someone was selling used that came witha variety of material and even another vise and a tying table top table for 25 bucks. I think total speant was about 175 or 185 bucks. Totally worth having a blast.
Flyrod49 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2010 I bought a kit from Orvis for $150 that had a book materials and tools. I tyed over 100flies before I had to buy more material. You can also buy tying kits for specific flies. I have not tried them but was told they were useful for some people. Good luck.
