krally 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2010 Hello, I'm new to tying, and looking for some advise on the best places to purchase material online. I dont have many stores by me except the big chain stores, and the Orvis by me just quit selling tying material. I picked up a Renzetti traveler vise new for $90 because Orvis was selling all material for %50 off! I tried finding material on a few websites and found that I had to use multiple sites to locate even some pretty common material, certain threads, wire, chenille, etc. Any advise? Online I mostly bought from Hook and Hackle, though I got to the point where I've got lots of material on hand for the little bit I still tie.

Stippled Popper 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2010 I've never been able to find a single online store who carried everything I use on a consistent basis. In order to avoid buying dribbles here and dabbles there, I picked the nearest reputable full service shop and put together a big enough order to interest them in handling a custom order for me. It has worked well for me the two times I've used this method. But it might not work well if you are in a big hurry for something.

flytire 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2010 i wish it were true, but there is no "BEST" mother of all online fly shops to buy tying materials. i deal with a few major online shops for my materials, j stockard being one of them however j stockard is starting to be a sore spot in my online buying. when it takes over 8 days to go from one side of connecticut to the other side (about 99 miles), its time to exercise other options

RustyB 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2010 I've made several orders from J Stockard and also from Bear's Den. My last order from JStockard never arrived and they were very good about refunding my money. Scott and his staff at THe Bear's Den are nice people and ship your material fast plus they will only charge you the actual postage cost so if you need a small order, you won't get hit with a $5.00 shipping charge. I've made a few orders from the guy at The Fly Tyers Dungeon too.

getholdofjoru 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2010 I like Hook and Hackle too, they give discounts if you order online. But I only use them for my bulk "general" purposes like hooks, beads and thread. I've had a few pieces of deer hair and marabou that came from them that isn't what I would pick out for myself if I were buying them at a store. But, you can't beat their price on most stuff.
