when to change the fly

Recommended Posts

When you can't see the fish is there some way to judge when a fly is ineffective and another type of fly should be tried?

Or maybe there are just no fish today.

Bear, when you can't see any fish or signs of them or activity, I usually start with something I know has worked in the past that I'm confident with. With warm and salt, I usually use the same fly in different depths of water from close to the bank to straight out in the middle - coldwater, can't say. Sometimes they can be near the bank but only looking for something below the surface, yet they could be cruising open water looking up.

That is why when the fly I'm trying doesn't work, I'll go to another fly I have confidence in that will cover a different part of the water column.

Gut instincts based on experience based on luck tells me when to change.

Then sometimes, the fish ain't in a eating mood.

If you find a concrete formula, you gonna make a million!
