onceahoosier 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2010 Hare are a few simple deer hair poppers I tied lately. Sounds like it would be simply to get the same size/shape every time, but I've struggled to do it. I made a cardboard template to fit on the eye of the hook which guides the trimming and that helps a lot. These are tied on Mustad 3366 #1/0 and TMC 8089 #6 hooks. Bryan Wright 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2010 Great looking poppers and who cares if there not exactly the same size you will never catch a fish that is exactly the same size every time. Variety is the spice of life as they say, I say it is the spice of fly's

onceahoosier 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2010 Here are the templates I use for trimming. Not very high tech, kinda like a soup bowl hair cut, but they work for me. Help me trim a little faster without having to worry about going too far. I also like being able to tie sizes I want with some consistency. The way I found works best is to initially trim close to the guide but leaving just a little extra around it. When I get most of the fly trimmed to shape I put it back on and finish the last bit of trimming. Tom

perchjerker 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2010 Great deer hair work! I do have a question: Why do you not trim the bottoms flat, as is typically recommended? perchjerker
