rockworm 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2010 I have a simple trick that works well for me when I have a similar problem: Tye on the ribbing near the hook bend. Wrap your thread forward and secure the shellback material near the front of the hook- leaving it hanging over the hook's eye. After dubbing the body, leave your thread hanging behind the eye. Pull your shellback rearward- over the body. Wrap your thread back in open turns to hold it in place. (You can reorient and rearrange your material as you make your thread turns.) Then wrap your rib firmly forward, unwrapping the thread as you go. I hope this helps.

steve'O 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2010 gaddy, I use stretchflex from Rainy's flies for all of my scud back and nymph wingcases. First thing I would look at is what thread you are using. If you use a stranded 8/0 like uni thread or Gudebrod it will make it a bit easier to tie it down. second when you wrap it make 2 or 3 fairly loose wraps if it does not slide to the side then tighten it down with 2 or 3 more secure wraps, if it moves you can easily slide it back to the top, the most important thing is leave your tag hanging off the back, tie in your rib dub the hook to eye. pull the scud back over the dubbing to the eye. hold it fairly tight with one hand and make the same 2 to 3 loose wraps if it slides you can reposition it on the top and tighten it. now take your tag end and wrap it up to the eye in the same pattern your rib will go, this will help hold the back material in place when you wrap you rib. tie in rib at eye whip finish and tease out the dubbing. steve
CM_Stewart 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2010 Just one tip. Don't worry about the scud back. I'll bet you'll catch just as many fish if you leave the back off. I catch about half my fish on scuds, and never, ever put backs on 'em.

JRG 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2010 Gaddy, Cut it to a point to tie it in...i.e. make a triangle on the end and catch the point with your thread. Stretch it a little as you tie it down to the point where you want the thorax or whatever to begin.
Icebjerg 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2011 I'm a new member going through posts. I'm a new tyer and have been given an alternitive to scud backing. It was suggested that I could use potatoe chip bags cut slim. These are shinny on one side and come in many different colours. Hope this helps. I know this is an older post but you never know when advice maybe needed.
