Laxi 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2011 Hi guys. Don't post that much here but thought I might share a part of my year with you. My family owns a big piece of land that includes one trout river and two trout lakes(one has char, the other has brown trout). Also, through friends I have access to two more rivers(trout, salmon/trout) and a few more lakes. So I can basically go fishing whenever I want in the summertime. Until july I've been fishing in the lakes, there is still snow melting in the mountains so the rivers are cold and have to much water in them, the rivers here don't start kicking in until mid july. It takes over an hour to walk to the brown trout lake and before this summer it hadn't been fished in for many years, so I went on a research mission with my spinning rod early in june to see if there was any good fish in the lake, and the results were good. Seeing that nice fish in the lake made me very happy and I went there a few times with my fly fishing rod. Only one of those fish was killed(and he tasted great), all others were released. In July I mostly fished in one river that my family owns and I hadn‘t had a lot of success until late July. This last one was really beautiful and strong! On 19th of July I was fishing and I walked past a long bend in the river that I have walked past a million times but never really paid much attention to it. But this time I decided to give it a go, the weather was nice, I had plenty of time and nothing to lose. The bend in the river is pretty long so it would take some time going through it properly but I decided to fish with a #12 nymph upstream and after about 30 minutes of fishing I was at the top of the bend when this magnificent 50 cm male brown trout takes the fly. There is a waterfall beneath the bend and keeping the fish away from going that way wasn‘t easy but after a few minutes and quite a few meters of line I landed the fish at the end of the riverbend. But when I was photographing the fish and measuring it and preparing to release it, the fish vomited this half-digested brown trout that turned out to be 15 cm! So that is quite a range in food selection, one minute he is eating other brown trouts, and the next he takes my #12 nymph. I'll show you some photo's of the "big" fish I chaught. These fish are all 42-55 cm(16,5"-21,7"). This one was really fat, and he had bitemarks on his dorsal fin. This is my biggest ever brown trout. This one obviously had a close encounter when he was younger, but the wound was fully healed. I had been wathcing this fish the whole summer before I finally caught him. One of the better fishing pools is in this beautiful landscape. The fishing is often quite visual. One last photo to remember a beautiful summer. Not all fish were caught on fly but all fish were released. There is one more thing I‘d like to show you. In my river there is a long segment without any proper fishing pools, so I tried to experiment a little and make my own fishing pools. Before And after This is completely experimental and I‘m just doing this for the fun of it. But this seems to be working because I saw nice fish and a bunch of small spawns that have settled in nicely. I moved all the rocks by hand and had no tools or machines whatsoever. Some parts of this look a bit unnatural but this winter mother nature will add the finishing touch and take away what se doesn‘t like. Does anyone here have any experience in making fishing pools for trout?. more pictures at My photos I hoped you enjoyed this and had a great year,

Laxi 0 Report post Posted January 4, 2011 Thanks both of you. awesome fish, must be incredible to own all that. Why the blacked out face in the pics? Tha blacked out face was originally to make my face unrecognizable on the internet in case any Icelanders stumbled upon this thread. I am very paranoid about my river and lakes(Iceland is a small country), the area is very sensitive and won't sustain much fishing, therefore I try to keep it a secret and especially on the internet That's why I have no landscape photos or photos with easily recognizable mountains in the background, having all of this to yourself is something I don't want to loose
