Synthetic Hair Material

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am fairly new to smallmouth river flyfishing and am wanting to tie some baitfish patterns. I'm wondering if anyone has had good (or bad) experience with any of the multitude of synthetic fiber choices. I have been doing a lot of searches and it sounds like not all of the choices work for larger (3" +) streamers or some may not mix well with others.

Here's a list of some I'm considering, but have never tried:

DNA frosty or fusion

Synthetic Yak

Enrico EP Fibers

Steve Farrar Flash Blend

Any advice is appreciated - thanks!

Ive had pretty good luck with EP. It has pretty good movement in the water and they have a bunch of good colors to pick from. I generally mix Ep with a little bucktail and flashabou on my clousers.

I've had good results using "Congo Hair"(an EP fibers substitute) and "water silk", both available from flytiersdungeon for a lot less than EP material.

EP fibers are great but on the pricey side. I too really like the Congo Hair and Water Silk form Fly tiers Dungeon. It’s a great inexpensive alternative to the real EP stuff.

Thanks, I'll give the congo hair and water silk a try. Now to decide on a pattern....

Follow-up question:

Since the dungeon site does not have pictures of their colors, can anyone recommend colors that they like? I am looking for a range of more natural baitfish colors - I know white, but is their olive light or dark, what brown, gray, golden yellow, etc works well? Thanks again.

I bought some DNA HoloFusion and tied some streamers with it. It is very nice material.

Day in and day out though, I'll take bucktail over synthetic every time.

novelty wigs-in most cases it is made from nylon-kinda krinkly. I have some yellow red and black. ties up nice and the color does not run.It also has a nice sheen to it. almost forgot I had them and I did not pay alot for them either. mind you I think the staff in the shop thought I was a little strange...LOL
