MIKE*A 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2004 If you missed it last spring, On 11/20/04 @ 0800 on ESPn2, the Walkers Cay Chronicles Episode that was shot in (near) Zanesville, ohio will be airing again. Flip and Brian flesichig(sp?) of Mad river outfitters(columbus) spend a couple days Bass Fishing at the "Wilds". I enjoyed the episode when i first saw it last Spring.......i have never fished the "Wilds" , as it is private property and MRO has exclusive rights to it(Can you say expensive?), however I have fished the ohio power lands which was originnally part of this (All reclaimed strip mining land) with over 300 lakes/ponds and it's a good time........Primarily bass/panfish....thiough occassionally if you get off the beaten path, you can find some smaller ponds w/a few other species......... I also just found out yesterday that there is a "Gander Mountain" going to be opening w/in 10 minutes of my house (Dayton, Ohio)!!! Woohooo! If you are familiar w/dayton, i's going in behind Elder Beermans @ I-70/SR202.....2 miles East of the I-75/I-70 interchange. Mike
Guest Report post Posted November 6, 2004 Sweet, I missed that episode that time. Remind me when it gets closer, I know I will forget Do you know of any lakes in that area(fly fishing friendly) that are open to the public? If so I would love to have a get together around there. MIKE*A 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2004 About 350 of them!!! the "Wilds" is a cooperative wildlife sanctuary run by a group of Ohio Zoo's. as far as i know, the only way to fish in there is by going thru mad River outfitters.......however, right next door is the "Ohio power Lands" (it has changed names, I forget what it's called now, everyone still refers to it as ohio power lands). The only requirements to fish there is to have an Ohio fishing License and a permit from the powerlands which is free and you can actually download one from the internet. If your not in a hurry, you can mail away fro one and they will send it to you with a map as well. They also have a number of camp areas (all free). they are primitive, but have wells and outhouses (very clean). I usually try to get there for atleast one long weekend every summer with a few day trips in between. I take a belly boat and sometimes a canoe. I have also taken my mountain bike in the past because there are a lot of old logging roads off the beaten path which lead to a lot of lakes/ponds that see little-no pressure. there are also a lot of beaver there, so every Spring you will see some new ponds pop up (and a few disappear)......great place to fish! I'll dig up the web address. As long as you avoid the "redneck holidays"(mem. day, 4th july, labor day) the campsites are empty thru the summer. Guest Report post Posted November 7, 2004 We had a Steelhead outing a few weeks ago, but we fished PA waters which are not far from Ohio. I plan on maybe getting another Steelie trip together sometime early Spring.
