Micro Nymphs?

Recommended Posts

I know next to nothing about Micro Nymphs or French Nymphs, other than a nights googling. I saw some lovely flies LuciV posted here a couple years ago (missed them the first time), and some more recent french nymphs "derfliegenbinder " posted on flyforums.co.uk .

The basic idea (I think) is small (18-20) heavily weighted ( ) fairly streamlined attractor nymphs. The European competition guys fish them in fleets on long light leaders in fast rocky water (something we have plenty of around here)(All I can picture is myself with a leader hairball in my hand and a very small nymph lodged firmly in each exposed bit of Velcro on my body).

I suppose discussion of fishing should be left to Talkflyfishing.com, but was wondering if any of you can shed further light on tying these things. I figure at least I could test them out on a dropper :)

These are just my spending an evening exploring the idea, I don't tie really small flies much, so didn't have any really fine thread, etc. Looking for some good peacock to try some quill bodies.

Would like to see some other examples, tying tips, hot spot or trigger ideas, etc. These were fun to tie.

those are awesome. I tie a lot of little guys like that, and they work well. I usually fish them as a dropper attached to the back of a dry fly, but I've been adding them even when fishing streamers with some results.

Yep, I too have a couple of boxes of "micro" nymphs. I would think that midge pupae, brassies, copper johns, would qualify. I always have some 18 and 20 size mayfly nymphs. I haven't been going the "attractor" route that much, mostly tiny pheasant tails, and fur nymphs. Many of mine have glass beads, and some have brass beads.

Don't know about the attractor micro nymphs, but you better watch out for those German speaking Frenchmen on U.K. sites. ;) :D

With a nom de plume of beadhead you would almost have to like them! :)

Carl, :) Does seem a little confused, The Czechs I do believe tie Czech nymphs, but I am not sure if the French tie French nymphs, or if only the French can tie French nymphs

Well, the world is a strange place... Czech nymphs come originally from Poland, but differ significantly from Polish nymphs. I was told the French nymphs come from Belgium, though they seem to be the rage in Czech right now. The best ones really do come from France though, which is a pity for those of us who are linguistically challenged (like me). Check out these pages: http://frenchynymph.blogspot.com/ http://bailfly.over-blog.com/ http://thymdd57.gobages.net/ they are awesome and the guys who put them up really know their stuff
