Shad Flies

I know that they're gizzard shad, just wanted to see if you had any experience in lakes. Sounds like a pretty good challenge then if nobody else does it

Not to bring up an old post, but I have caught a couple gizzard shad on the fly. More or less of an experiment actually. I just wanted to see if they would bite. They nibbled on a size 22 black midge pattern. I found them in a pool that the flooding river left behind.

like you, I also have good results with red and yellow. Shad arent feeding in the rivers, so the goal is a reaction strike. The brighter the better. I get them in Easton and north up to Portland. Not there this year, just moved so I will miss the shad run. Have fun.

 

Also, what kind of flash are you using. Seems very bright.

 

In May I had some active shad bites in the Delaware River for an inch long, bright wobbler fly. The fish was biting in slow pools (blind casting from a boat, with a sink tip).
