Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2011 Took off work to pick up kids after exams so decided to stop at a canal in Jefferson Parish. I caught these 5 Rios plus another 5 that we didn't photograph and a few bluegill. My son took the pictures and caught a bluegill and missed quite a few from bad hook settings directions from me. The flies were a #12 black foam spider and the Squirrelly and Micah caught his bluegill on a Jitterbee without a bead head. Hope this isn't to many pics. Aquarium fish is how they were introduced in to our area. People purchased them small and when they grew to large for their tanks, they were released in to local canals and ponds. With our mild winters, they find refuge in pipes and deeper water to keep warm and have proliferated. Once October/November hits, you can't find one of these fish. They do compete with the bluegill for nesting area and can push the naturally occuring bluegill out but I'm seeing more and more bluegill and Cichlids co-habitating so maybe we can have both. Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2011 Dart, they are in the Tilapia family but better tasting. They are on par if not better than Bluegill. Coming from this drainage canal though, I won't eat them; from cleaner water, I have and they are good. As for fighting, surprisingly, they don't pull as hard as Bluegill. I know you cajun's 'll eat anything! Dart I think I may have to correct ya...not ALL cajuns will eat anything ....but ALL Coon Ass Cajuns will!!!!
