30 min epoxy

Recommended Posts

Mark, you crack me up. You always need a lot of everything cheap.

If you want it cheap, the best way is to buy quantity. However, cheap then becomes relative as a larger amount will have a larger dollar amount but per ounce, it will be cheaper. For instance, I purchase the 9 ounce containers for $10, whereas the double syringe, maybe a half ounce of the same epoxy is between $3 - $4. Then you can find larger quantities like a gallon for about $75.

I get my 9 ounce BSI(Bob Smith Industries) epoxy from a mom'n'pop hobby store.

I also have a hard time finding 30 minute epoxy, ESPECIALLY clear. Lots of yellow out there. That being said, I usually use the 5 minute stuff, which I find at WalMart in the automotive section.

Most of your epoxies are two part and most often, the resin is a translucent yellow in color but when mixed, it becomes clear. All epoxies will yellow and weaken when exposed to UV for prolonged periods but the 5 minutes cure epoxy will degrade and turn yellow the quickest.

It is to be found in all of the model; planes, trains, boats, cars, etc., shops in my area. Most have it with their own 'Brand" label on it; but they are all the same thing. GO FOR IT!

No luck in finding 30 Minute Epoxy at three fly fishing shops, Micheal's, or Hobby Lobby, but the local model shop (i.e. They sell model planes, cars, trains, and etc.) had it right behind the register!!

I'm not talking about just looking at the packaged product. I mean seeing printed on the label: " Cures to a translucent yellow color."

You might want to be a bit cautious about buying glues or epoxies of any kind in bulk. Since I'm both a tyer and a rod builder I try to use wholesale purchasing whenever possible. Unlike other supplies (say hooks by the 1000 per size, feathers by the pound, deertails by the 100) glues and epoxies will tend to degrade a bit over time. I used to buy "Krazy Glue" by the carton (10 tubes, carded per carton) but had to quit when I found that the last two or three tubes were frequently unusable (they'd hardened into a rock). You can't imagine how frustrating it is when a properly glued up reelseat won't kick off and harden properly (and you have to remove everthing, clean with acetone and do it a second time... Nowadays I try to buy that sort of stuff in just enough quantity to last a year or two max. It was a hard lesson to learn.
