Goose biots???

Recommended Posts

What are goose biots? What part of the goose skin are they found? Can biots be bought or does the complete skin need to be purchased?

A goose biot is from a primary wing feather. The leading edge of the primary feather is where the biots come from. They are very strong feather "barbs". You can buy them in packages, dyed to any color you want. You can also get them off of goose feathers themselves or you can use turkey biots. They make great tails or legs. You can tie them in as legs, take a hot needle (not to hot) and touch it to the biot and it will bend like the joint of a leg. Look up goose biots on the web. There are step by steps that show how they are used and what they look like.

Turkey biots are usually much longer, and when you by the quills, both the leading edge, and the trailing edge barbs can be used for legs, tails, or wrapping biot bodies. When you purchase a package of goose biots, you get a few of the leading edges which are cut from the quills. These tend to be shorter than the turkey, and usefull for wrapping bodies only on smaller flies. They will still make good tails or legs.

Thanks for the info. All this time and it is just the short side of a quill feather.
