If one gets robbed or scammed in a parking lot, is it the responsibility of the store or the individual to file the report to get their stuff back, the mods can't file a mail fraud case, the individuals that participated in the swap NEED TO FILE THE REPORT not the mods, the mods weren't involved in the incident hence they CANNOT FILE said reports. To all those involved in the "Ant Swap" that went south YOU need to file if you want your problem solved, it is not up to someone else to do it for you. I have done a little checking on it and that's what my postal inspector has told me about it. If you want it done, do it yourself and don't try and push it off on the mods, they have their hands tied in this case. So my suggestion would be to get all the people from the swap and put together a response that you can file with the Post Office and get it taken care of, if not one doesn't have the right to whine about something that one choses not to do anything about. The only thing we can do to prevent this from happpening again is to do a little homework, like checking out the individual hosting the swap, if you have ?'s ask a mod if he has the info on said SM, if they don't let the list know the truth about the individual. Or shoot the dice and take a chance.

 

I have had a good time swapping in the short time I've been here and don't intend on letting one bad incident ruin a great site and possible great experiences to come in the future, would you hand someone money that you don't know, and TRUST that he will give it back, or do you check him out a little bit and feel safe in the fact that he will do what he says he will do. I personally don't have any reason to not trust those that I have swapped with b/c I see that they have held swaps before and have participated on the site for a while and feel totally comfortable in doing so, if I get burned, then I need to do whatever I can to seek the justice that I can. It was bound to happen sooner or later, I am sorry that all that got taken, got taken, but the action now falls on your plate, not anyone elses, it only takes a few minutes to file a report at the post office, and the info has been posted on this thread if you check it. The penalty for mail fraud is jail time plus fines, so make his day and send him off on vacation at the gray bar hotel for a few years, he deserves it.

Mybadhabit... So what you are saying is, I must tell my local authorities what happened on the FTF? Then they can request the info from FTF about his IP# and all the other details they have on him?

 

I'm now confused and thought FTF could/would also file a complaint. Since the person/theif used their software/website for illegal activity to scam it's members. And FTF becomes the third party involved in this case? That's what someone from legal told me? It's like if FTF doesn't do anything it's like they are harboring/condoning the criminals and don't care about the safety of their internet users?

Ok. Fair.. I wont run swaps that finish/end before the due dates anymore. I won't host B/c other members wont host a swap for other new members on your site. Sorry Will, I help you and other members on this forum out allot on your site. As you can see I hosted a swap for your members and didn't get a thing from it. Since I didn't tye anything. I just wanted your forum people to have a swap they could enjoy & become active members. What was I thinking??? But then again. you state b/c i don't pay. I have no right's and shouldn't say how I honestly feel? Sorry pal if the truth hurts!!

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that there is quite a bit of over reacting going on in this thread. I swap here and on a local board and have probably been involved in about 20 swaps over the past 2 years. Of these, one went bad when a guy on the local form disappeared after receiving all of the flys. Of course it was disappointing and made me mad, but I never found out what happened to the guy. For all I know, he was hit by a bus. Maybe Flon18 met a similar end. Trying to turn this into a federal case (quite literally) seems a bit silly to me. If I generously allow a buck each for the 12 flys I tied, and maybe 4 dollars total postage, I'm out $16. Considering all the benefits of the other 19 swaps that went well, I just don't see the point of dwelling on such a minor loss.

Will obviously puts a lot of work into making this a great forum and providing a resource that allows us to enjoy swapping that is unique on the net. To expect him to vett every swapmeister and file charges when one goes bad is ridiculous. I have never assumed that Will, or any mod, was responsible for what went on in a swap. The vast majority of members here are top notch. I learn something in every swap and am usually humbled by the quality of the flys. Don't let one or two jerks ruin this for you!

NJ sarcasm is a low blow, if you and Johnny don't like the way the site is run don't use it. It is very simple, you are under no obligation.

I have nothing but praise for the mods and when I have needed them to intervene in the past I had the sense to ask, and got the answers I needed and the result I wanted. It is easy to take a swipe at someone for something that is not their fault, s--t happens, accept it and move on.

Well said Steve. I am angry about the swap but it is not the responsibility of Will and the other mods to fix this. Everyone needs to relax and quit blaming the mods and the owner. I feel that because the site is free and it provides me with a great amount of reference material and communications with people I would normally not be involved with, my loss of 24 flies plus postage is worth it. If you feel the site and mods are not doing their job or you are not getting your "moneys" worth from the site, there are others out there.

 

I started this mess when I bitched about Justin Nolf aka flon18 on this thread. My mistake! When someone starts talking about FTF being a third party in some type of legal action, then Houston, we have a problem. The site is FREE! The old saying "you get what you pay" DOES NOT APPLY in this case. I get a hell of a lot from this site for nothing but logging in. This is a great site and again, IT IS FREE!

I don't see any reason to hold grudges in any direction, this is a site dedicated to fly tying and whatever else gets involved, there is no other place that has done as much for me as this site, when it comes to tying and information that I request. My hat's off to the owner and mods for doing their best to keep things running as smooth as it does. Since I've been on, I have never had a problem with anyone or anything, my swaps have all been great experiences and the trades that I have done with other member have all gone well. I see no reason for anyone to get offended or place blame or ridicule on anyone for something that one person chose to do that was wrong, the flon18 thing was unfortunate for all those involved, but there is no reason for it to cause such a rift in how we view each other. We move on when other bad things happen in life, there is no reason to drag this dead horse thru the mud any longer and cause more damage to the relationships that we have formed here. We are adults and have probably dealt with worse things, I know I have.

 

The reason this topic was started was to find out if there was a way to keep records on the people that consistantly drop out of swaps without contacting the SM and have a list of such people, not to grind axes on anyone in particular. I will volunteer to keep and update such list if the mods and the owner are willing to share the info with me, and if not, so be it.

 

This is my relax time on here and this thread has caused much conflict and resentment on the site and for that I apologize, I just wanted to be of assistance and understand some things, and boom, I seem to have opened pandora's box, and for that I apologize.
