Li'lDave 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2011 A sooty grunter blackbream Never heard of them. What type of water are they in? Kevin Hey Kev... The sooty grunter is a sub-tropical to tropical freshwater fish here in Australia that just loves snags in fast moving water (they fight as hard and dirty as Mangrove Snapper). The one in the pic was taken from the top of a log that was half way down a shallow rapid... a small fish, but still great fun! The Black (or Pikey) bream is an estuarine and inshore species that are commonly encountered right around the coast of Australia in amongst mangrove roots, submerged timber and also on rocky / shoally bottoms in amongst gutters and sand-bars off our beaches. They are typically caught in water temps from about 15 degrees and up... (water here doesn't get much below 17 or 18 degrees even in winter). The humble bream is "bread and butter" for most Australian fishers and they are great targets on fly using 4 to 6wts... The bream can also be surprisingly finicky in its feeding habits, and the one pictured is my first and only (caught 3 weeks ago) Help? or too much rambling?? Steve P 0 Report post Posted July 15, 2011 First up is my first decent gill of the year, almost 8". Next was my first decent bass of the year, really nice fat girl in March, the water was freezing but the big fish were eating so I went with it. Here is mt first bass from a weed mat (THANKS SO MUCH CREAM!!!). Here is a really nice green sunfish, this guy would go an easy 10" maybe closer to the 11 mark. Here is one of my carp pics, this is a fat boy from some boat docks that they get fed at and he was taken on a pellet fly.

NJ All Day 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2011 Damn cream, i'm tying up some of those ploppers.
TheCream 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2011 Damn cream, i'm tying up some of those ploppers. The double rattle version is non-articulated. I did it on a 1/0 bass bug stinger hook. The rattles make it heavy but I like it, and the results so far have been good. Here are a few more pics, basically freeze frames from some video I have shot recently. Steve, good to see that pattern getting blown up in other parts of the country!

I checked your Youtube channel for the video, didn't see it. I hope you plan on posting it, sure looks like some exciting footage. Kirk
