MontanaBound 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2011 I have been tying a lot of hopper patterns, and really like the way pheasant tail make great legs. My problem is getting them tied in a not to look like the joint of a leg. Any help on how to tie these would be great. Once i do get them tied which seems like an impossibility they look great on any hopper pattern i have tried. Thanks
flytire 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2011 get a "knit picker" tool from your local big box craft store http://www.amazon.com/Knit-Picker-3-Inch-Latch-Hook/dp/B000FID3DI check out steps 21 through 26 http://www.charliesflyboxinc.com/flybox/details.cfm?parentID=147 or you can buy them pre knotted http://www.bearlodgeangler.com/fly_feathers_2.htm
MontanaBound 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2011 Thanks for those great links. I have been cutting the fibers off first then trying to tie into a knot. But leaving them attached makes a whole lot more sense.
perchjerker 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2011 You can also use a crochet hook or a pair of fine tweezers in lieu of the knit-picker. All you need is something to put through the loop and catch the fibers behind it and pull them through the loop with. perchjerker
Guest Report post Posted July 29, 2011 I bought the Rainy brand leg knotter. I put a pheasant tail feather in my vise and just tie them up. I looks like a crochet hook but it's got the little fold down bar and you don't have to worry about pulling the tips through.
NoSlack 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2011 Nothing better then tying legs with hands. No need to buy tools. I tear off 3 per leg, two over hand knots, done. I find the ones you can buy pre-tied are too clumpy...but that's my opinion. Good luck.
