Steve I'm looking it up but the sbs would be great if you could. Thanks. It looks like a mouse with a skid plate. I like it. Kevin
Steve P 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2011 It basically is a mouse with a skid plate..... the original actually called for you to cut a piece of a pop can and epoxy it to the bottom of the fly, now he suggests just epoxy and some UV cure stuff....... whatever floats your boat really. The thing is it has a "leg" out of either side on the back giving it the illusion of two frog legs, pretty sweet little pattern really just time consuming to tie. I used to tie them for a local shop and got 3 bucks each out of them and surprisingly they even sold at the shop for 5.50...... so yeah I think it's half just looks bad a$$. I'll work on an SBS of some form give me a week or so I have some other stuff going right now. Steve

DoubleHaul 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2011 Eastern, This is a store bought fly that fishes just like you want it to. I have not tried to duplicate it because I don't know how to pack hair so that it is that dense that far from the tie in point but maybe you can make it work. This particular fly will walk just like a miro lure on the surface, hook point up. That's a commercial fly? Do you know the name of it? As far as getting the hair tight at the back, I'd think that the tie in point for all those rubber legs would be pretty big and would provide a good "stop" to pack the hair against. sniksoh 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2011 the kdm rat fly rides hook point up. kevin doran designed it. he bends the hook like whats been said and trims the fly reversly, flatside on top of hook shank.then when he is done trimming he puts epoxy on the flat side of the fly to add weight. look it up on google. on kevin dorans website he sells a dvd showing how to tie it. i dont think the dvd is neccessary cause the pictures pretty much explain it
Al Beatty 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2011 I have this idea I have been working on and I need help. I tyed a few deer hair scum frog imatations. I'm trying to duplacate the rubber scum frog. I'm trying to get the hook point up. When I did it without weight it fliped hook down. Then I tried my smallest barbell eyes and it runs just under the surface. Does anyone have an idea to do it hook point up and keep it on the surface? Kevin Hi Kevin, This type of fly is fairly easy to tie (AND fish with hook point UP). The goal is positioning the materials below the shank so they counter balance the weight of the hook point that you want pointing up. There are several ways to accomplish this but my favorite is to flare (not spin) the deer hair on the bottom of the shank (which will be the top of the fly). If you must put hair on the top of the shank (bottom of the fly) then you must double the amount of hair placed on the bottom of the shank (top of the fly). It's all about compensating for weight to force that weight (the hook point in this case) where it doesn't want to go; in other words, overcome gravity. Take care & ... I understand the way your saying. And to leave the other side of the shank bare. Thanks Kevin
