ditz2 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 I am considering the purchase of a TFO 7wt 8.5' to 9.5'. I have read all the manufacturer's propaganda but I am still not sure which model I should buy. I am not sure I am a good enough caster for a real fast rod. I believe that my other old rods are medium to medium fast action. I would like to buy a high end rod but the cost is not practicle for a retired old fart like me. I would appreciate any thoughts.
flytire 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 the only way to know which one is for you is to head out to your local fly shop and try them out yourself. then choose the one that best fit your casting style. while youre at the shop, try out different brands. another brand may suit you better. Haa haa haa....I fear that I might pick up a $800 rod and really like it. The closest FF shop is an hour and a half away and I hoped that some of you knowledgable fellas might be willing to air your thoughs on the subject and at least give me a starting point when I get to the shop. Thanks
NJ All Day 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 Thats why you dont go around, or even look at the $800 rods. Go around on a bunch of different websites like Cabelas, or Basspro, and various other websites to see the different reviews people give the rods. Njardar 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 Simple solution, take your wife with you. There's no way you'll walk out with an $800 rod.
BigBrownTrout 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 I definitely agree that casting them is the only way to decide what rod is best for you. I do own 4 TFO's and very familiar with 5 of their lines, so I might be able to provide some info to assist in your decision. First it would depend on what you plan to do with the rod. Besides from the BVK (I don't have the experience to say one way or another)I've spent a lot of time with the Clouser and the Axiom in a 7wt. Both rods are great, different in how the action responds when casting. The Axiom, TiCR and TiCrX are all fast action rods where the Clouser IMO is more of a mid flex rod with a stiffer tip. When it comes to sinking lines and big bugs the Clouser rod handles those better as that is exactly what it is designed to do. I also like all three of the other models mentioned. Each is a little different and should be left to personal preference. Keep in mind this is just one opinion from one angler. The choice is yours. I assume that normally that would be a good idea but in my case she would say go ahead and get it. It's only money. I am just too frugle to spend that kind of money at this time in my life. If you want a $800 rod (and no, there's nothing wrong with dropping a G on a rod) I REALLY think you should at least try the new Sage One. Just came out. I was impressed. Guest rich mc Report post Posted September 20, 2011 our club just had a cast and compare with 30 rods i was impressed with echo 84 rods[8ft 4inch] ,8wt rigged with airflo bass/musky line . they didnt have the echo ion rods which are 9ft , faster and $189. i own a 8wt bvk withrio outbound line its very nice. others liked the ross rods . there is nothing like casting on the water with a fly to help you make a decision. rich mc
