Li'lDave 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2011 I know I'm 'addicted' and I'm sure I'm not alone.... But each day I spend away from water I feel little piece of me 'dies'... But come the weekends I breathe new life.... Maybe that's why 14 day shifts suck so much, Today my daydream was a waking one. We were surveying the bed levels of some streams for a couple of creek crossings. I could swear the otherwise still waters in the nearby pools were being intermittently disturbed by yellow belly (golden perch), a species I have never caught and most likely never will - sigh. My vise keeps me slightly sane but 12hr days means I don't tie much.... 4 poppers and a couple of gurglers for a trip when I return home to chase some sooty grunter.... Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2011 My name is Kirk Dietrich and I too am addicted to Fly Fishing. Fortunately, I have an eight hour day job and after I drop my four children off at three different schools, I have 30 minutes to kill before I'm due to sign in at work. My commute to the office takes me through our New Orleans City Park and that water calls my name louder and louder the further I pass through the park as if it thinks I'm going to pass it up. Inevitably, I am forced to stop and fish - no the fish aren't usually big but the water and scenery are beautiful for still warmwater and its good food for my soul before having to get in front of a computer screen all day. If I don't stop, I don't feel complete, so, I think I too have the affliction. Weekends are usually filled with obligations and football games, so, unless I plan a boat trip to the marsh, I don't fish then but look forward to going back to work on Monday when I can visit my little sanctuary in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Not a bad addiction, you are not alone. Kirk
NJ All Day 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2011 I have Classes 9-4, on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. But I have a two hour break between to the two, and there is a decent river right by my college so some days if i dont have homework to do i will stop at the river for lunch, and a little bit of fishing. I have been thinking about bringing my vise and some tying materials so i could tie. But on Tuesday's I only have one class from 10-11:20 so i have plenty of time after class i usually tie a few flies after. Then Fridays I have class 1-4, every once in a while i'll take a drive to a pond after class, then wait for traffic to pass as i fish. I'm also an addict, and i just got a new 2 weight so i cant wait till i can fish for some blue gill's and bass.

FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2011 I am Mike Bishop and i think there is no cure! Nor would i really want one, no matter how alienated it makes me from my 'normal' friends.
poksal 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2011 I'm retired, mostly... I can tie and fish when ever I want to, mostly.. ... that's a problem, mostly. Many things don't get done... I've never been happier... and I've never made less money. Now I finally understand, money doesn't compute into happiness. Tying flys and fly fishing puts things into perspective like nothing else I have ever done. My sense of values is squared up. My attitude is squared up. Many things I used to worry about,... just were not as important as I thought they were... .... I think it is the freedom from all those other things that is so addicting.. 'else - how could you expain taking so much effort to tie the right fly just right to catch a fish and then put it back in the water providing such a joy??? jhammer 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2011 I am a fly fishing addict as well. I have all the time in the world to go, but I never feel good enough to go most of the time.
Li'lDave 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2011 I guess I can't complain too much.... There's plenty of wide open spaces and scenery isn't too bad.... There's plenty of cattle, and even a few galahs, some of them aren't so bright though. And most importantly there's quite a bit of water, I'm just not allowed to fish in it

Horseshoes 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2011 Nice, what is that alligator with the tail snubbed off?
JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2011 Nice, what is that alligator with the tail snubbed off? If I'm not mistaken, it is Tiliqua rugosa, commonly called a "Shingleback" or "Stump-tailed Skink". It's a kind of Blue-Tongued Skink. Once in a while you see Blue-Tongued Skinks in pet shops here in the US which specialize in reptiles.
Horseshoes 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2011 You mean it is fairly small?
Li'lDave 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2011 Yeah... That's a shingle back... It was about 12 to 15 inches long , maybe a little longer. And J is also correct in saying that it's a fairly close relative to the Blue-tongued lizard. PS My dream last night was pretty vivid. Got a nice cod on a white clouded and then had to help out another boat...
Li'lDave 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2011 Well it's D-day.. But I need to get the lawn mower and whipper-snipper out first, and a visit to the RSCPA to introduce myself to a potential new fishing companion... A bit of liesurely exercise 'round the lunchtime low-tide sounds great. Tomorrow we leave @ 0530 for a 1.5hr drive then a 4km walk to some VERY fishy waters, I'm hoping they want to pray. More of the same on Sunday I hope, with another mate and a punt (I have been made aware that there are crocodiles bigger than the boat in there, but we should be ok ).
