KSFisher 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2011 Just thought I would see where everybody buys their tying material. Do you support your local fly shop or do you buy material mostly online? If you purchase online what website do you use?
utyer 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2011 I am not the best example of where to buy materials. I have been supporting my local fly shops for almost 50 years. I have been lucky enough to have been able to purchase material at wholesale, and trade material for custom orders for a few shops. I have quite a large collection of material, but in the last 15 years or so, I have been buying more and more online since my local shop has a very limited selection. Buying on-line if you have no shops close is a viable option. By carefully shopping a number of different places you can save a little money. I don't feel there is any one on-line shop that has the best of everything, or that may have every thing in stock all the time. Here are a few that I have used, and all have been satisfactory to excellent (at least in my experience.) J Stockard (site sponsor,) they should be one of your first thoughts. Good service, a wide selection, and fair prices. They offer monthly specials that you can save you money. Hook and Hackle. Fly Tyers Dungeon. Very good pricing on what they do have. Excellent line of dubbing, synthetic hair, and flash. They have a yearly "Christmas box" which is well worth the price. Anglers Workshop Blue Ribbon Flies, excellent source of hair. Dream Drift Flies, good for hooks, eyes, beads, cone heads, and other materials. This is only a list of places I have used, there are HUNDREDS of good places to buy materials on-line. dreamcaster4639 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2011 Those are all good websites I have also used but don't forget about your local craft stores hobby lobby, Michaels, etc. You can find lots of useful stuff there also.
ninja115 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2011 I buy from the local tackle shop. If I don't see what I want, I tell him and he can usually get it. If he can't find it, I'll tell him where to get it, and he'll go and buy extra stuff so as to get free shipping on the order. Plus, I think he realizes that eventually I will come back and buy the rest of it. Some stuff I've asked him to get, I've actually come back into the shop a few weeks later and said "I've come for the rest of that......". He then says, " Someone else came in and liked that too, I guess I have to order more". His prices usually can't be beat by what I find online. Plus, I can sit and talk to him for an hour or so.....
