largemouthTLOCD 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2011 I live in Central florida on the east coast (Playalinda beach) and heard that the blue fish were starting to bite good. I thought about trying it out but heard they were rough on flies. If you have any tips on durable and easy to tie flies please let me know. Also, how far out are they usually. Thanks in advance. agn54 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2011 Any baitfish tied with Super Hair hold up well, like Surf Cnadis as NJ said. Also clousers with super hair work well
Markbob 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2011 The Blues that we get down here are pretty small compared to the new england fish but I would still recommend a wire bite tippet of some sort. For our east coast beaches, your best luck is going to be to get out past the breakers where the water is a little clearer. Use patterns like the surf candy or others with heavy weights and tons of flash. In this case, the weight isn't for depth but for action. I frequently use a clouser or similar pattern tied completely of flash. Just get a few yards outside the breakers and cast parallel to them and you should be good. remember, they travel in large schools so you may fish and fish and fish with nothing to show for it and then have 10-30 minutes of nonstop action and then nothing again until they come back by. if you can find a small inlet that holds a lot of mullet,or other bait fish, the blues wont be far behind. largemouthTLOCD 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2011 I looked up surf candy and its pretty similar to a glass minnow fly I tied when I first started for spotted sea trout in the indian river lagoon. Would this work in a bigger size with a bit of flash. Sorry about the poor quality of the picture but its off my phone. Thanks for the help.
Markbob 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2011 That looks like a pattern that would work well, add more weight and flash to it though. Adding the weight will give the fly a Gotcha type action that drives them nuts.
NJ All Day 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2011 You could always just use a sinking line to get down to them. I say just try bait fish flies with synthetics and epoxy, to give them some more durability.
agn54 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2011 A sinking line would probably work well. I always just use a floating line and like Markbob said, use weighted flies if I want to get it down. I also agree on flash, certainly attracts them. Remember to strip it fast, you can't go too fast for blues.
