TheCream 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2011 Does anyone here tie with the Rainy's foam frog bodies? If so, where do you purchase them? Seems like every mainstream place I check has only their popper heads, no frog bodies.

Stippled Popper 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2011 Have you tried going to the Rainy's Website and doing a dealer search? If you select "USA" under Type, a list of all USA Dealers/Distributors will pop up. I noticed The Fly Shop in Redding, CA is one. Perhaps there is one near you. Several times, when a shop didn't carry a particular item but do carry other items in the same brand, I've been able to make a custom order. Stippled, I tried several searches on their site, but found most websites had all the popper bodies but the frog bodies (The Fly Shop was one suce place), and even more sites were either down or the links were not correct! I had the chance to buy a pack when I was at BPS in Cincinnati this summer and have kicked myself ever since for not doing it. BPS online has only the small and medium sizes, I'd like to go large. I've never tried to place a custom order with any of the big stores such as BPS or Cabela's. There is a Sportsmen's Center in Bordentown, NJ on the list and a The Fly Hatch in Shrewsbury, NJ. If you have done business with them or you know they have a good reputation, they might be willing to place a custom order for you of an item they don't normally carry in inventory. Other than that you might try contacting J. Stockard. The worse that could happen is a "Sorry! can't help you." Then I am fresh out of ideas.
JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2011 I've bought several packs at Bass Pro, in different locations. I've used them, I don't think they are anything special compared to any other similar popper body.
TheCream 0 Report post Posted October 20, 2011 I've bought several packs at Bass Pro, in different locations. I've used them, I don't think they are anything special compared to any other similar popper body. I didn't expect them to outfish any other type of body, just something different I wanted to try. After tying/painting on some of the Wapsi saltwater popper bodies, I see myself using those a little more for bigger bass applications over their standard bass-sized poppers I have used in the past. There are certain places with better quality fish where I'd like to have something with a bigger overall profile, which was my reason for wanting the Rainy's Frog bodies. Curtis Fry 0 Report post Posted October 20, 2011 I'd say contact anyone that carries any Rainy's products and have them order for you. Rainy's is good when it comes to those types of special shipments etc (I've done it a lot when the local store is out of stock). And I like those frogs... Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted October 21, 2011 Very nice frogs El Frito! I have never used tube flies before much less ones in floaters, would you mind sharing your thoughts on the benefits. I'm thinking that if the body comes free from the hook during the fight, it could help reduce wear and tear on your bug?? Kirk

With the hook set back like that, the fly is naturally a bit less likely to get hooked up in the weeds. Even better, you can tie on weedless bass hooks like the wacky weedless style hooks. That way, you get a nice hook gap and a pre-built weed guard. Or, if you don't like/want a weedless hook, you just plug in a regular mosquito hook or whatever... You can throw an overall bigger pattern but keep the weight down because you forgo the hook shank. I tie a lot of my topwater stuff on tubes nowadays. Just works out better for me... TheCream 0 Report post Posted October 21, 2011 Curtis, the tube style frog definitely intrigues me, as well. I was tinkering with weedless designs this year trying to get a good (at least nearly) 100% weed free topwater to work over weed mats and pads. What I came up with was an articulated foam topwater that was a spinoff of another pattern, hoping that the free-floating hook with weed guard would not foul as bad in the weeds. It worked well, but hookups were not great on smaller fish. It seemed to have no issues hooking larger bass, but the smaller fish would hit and miss a lot. The broad front puts off one heck of a wake, strikes are ferocious.

Curtis, that is a really good point about being able to use a variety of hooks. I'm often torn between putting a weed guard on or not and if you do and don't want it and cut the guard off then you can't readily on the water put another on. With the tube, you could do that. Add another thing to my list of To Do. Cream, I love the looks of that but the first time you posted it - that has been on my To Do list as well. Thanks, Kirk
bigfoot 0 Report post Posted October 21, 2011 Curtis did you make the tube frog popper? If so you done a great job if not where can I puchase them at? Any help would be great. Thanks BF
