It’s only a few miles from home as opposed to 150 miles to my favorite trout stream. It’s really been fun fishing this river this late summer! I’ll add the Murdich minnow has proved to be awesome for these fish. Mike. Those are beautiful smallies Mike. I discovered small mouth fishing for the first time this summer. While fishing for trout this spring I caught a few fingerling small mouth on nymphs. I had no idea that there were small mouth in that water but if there are fry there must be adults in that river somewhere. As I rarely use streamers when trout fishing I realized that I had never thrown one on that river. On my next visit there I brought small box of streamers. The fly that worked best all summer for me was a streamer that I tie with muddler minnow deer hair head, silver braid body and marabou wing. Some peacock herl on top and a few pieces of flash. Since the weather has changed it has stopped being effective and I haven't found what they like in the autumn yet. All the rain we've had in New England this year I'm thankful to have found a place where I can swing streamers and still fish when the water is up. I just bought an Orvis Recon 9' 6"-6 weight specifically to be able to push large streamers. On that river last Thursday, trout fishing using winged wet flies. I caught these two, the Brown on a #12 Invicta and the Bow on a #10 Golden Coachman which is a Royal Coachman tied with yellow floss instead of red. I had a really nice one get off after a good battle.
DFoster 0 Report post Posted October 16, 2023 A few little guys from the weekend. This small Brown was caught on a river where none should be-the question is where did it come from?

DFoster 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2023 I was fortunate to have a couple of vacation days just as we hit a really nice stretch of weather tee shirt weather late last week. The fish in this brook don't grow large, the browns and brookies below are about average size. The 10" Brook Trout (2nd to last photo) is really a trophy fish for this little stream. It got to the point on that stream that all the fish were confined to small shallow pools no more than knee deep and constantly surrounded by Blue Herons. I remember thinking the trout have no place to hide, the herons are going to eat every last one of them. I don't know where they found shelter but Somehow they got through. Nature is amazing. DFoster 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2023 A raw day after work last week. The chilly wind and cold water had me questioning why I didn't go straight home, light the wood stove and watch other people fish on youtube. I got this Brown and Bow swinging wets so it was worth the effort. They both took right at the end of the swing as the fly started to rise.

DFoster 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2023 Last Thursday we had some fine weather with temps in the low 60's. The browns and brook trout are spawning here so to avoid potentially stepping on redds I decided to not wade but fish only from shore. This is dark tannic stained water and with the sun hanging low, redds are really hard to spot. I caught 3. The fist 2 look so similar I thought I caught the same brown twice but if you look closely at the spot patterns on the gills you can see they are different. The first fish came on a #20 Slim Shady and the other 2 on a #12 Royal Coachman soft hackle.
DFoster 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2023 Saturday brought a few mid day hours of reasonable temps without wind. Here in New England the sun doesn't make it very high up into the sky at this time of year but on a mild day If you time it right the trout fishing can be good. I got 3 fish during a brief window this Saturday, a Fall Fish, a Herring and this Bow that grabbed a #14 black hare's ear. Possibly my last fish of the 2023, the artic weather isn't far off. If so I'll miss my streams but I've had a truly wonderful fishing season this year.
