Piker20 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2016 Thats a real long bodied perch. The UK ones tend to be shorter and become like footballs as they hit the bigger weights. I'd love to see a big fish from those waters if they are all long like that.
vicente 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2016 I'd love to see a big one to Piker it's pretty cold up there and I was reading that when it's cold their growth is stunted.
Piker20 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2016 Um. Not sure about that unless water temp is below 6deg a lot. Here in UK we're not renowned for our weather. As long as there is enough space and prey they seem to do well. We have stunted fish when they are over breeding in a small pond.
mikechell 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2016 Cold water doesn't stunt growth, it just slows it. A Florida bass, for example, can put on a pound a year or more. A 10 pound bass might only be 7 or 8 years old. Up north, it may take 15 to 20 years for bass to get to 10 pounds. Â The bad side of that, bass growth as fast as it is here, they don't live nearly as long. The world record will never be broken from a Florida water, because the bass don't live long enough to get that big. Â So, there are probably BIG perch in that lake ... just old and very "experienced".
FlatsRoamer 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2016 Mike I think that the better term instead of "experienced" would be "educated"... at least here it is.
vicente 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2016 That water is pretty cold under snow and ice roughly 6 months of the year and the lake is probably only 15ft deep and comprised almost recruiting of fresh snow melt. I would be happy if there are big ones in there I don't think it gets fished often so there's a good chance
mikechell 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2016 Mike I think that the better term instead of "experienced" would be "educated"... at least here it is. This subject has been debated for decades. I am on the side of ... fish don't "think, reason and learn", they are conditioned." Conditioning is experience, not education. Â And I've come to the definitely conclusion that, like school kids on clear Spring days ... Florida fish have skipped "school" way too many times. vicente 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2016 I've always kind of wondered about the fish learning thing, I can tell you this much though trout are not smart, skittish yes, but I've caught the same fish 4 or 5 days in a row on the same lure these are native Brown's not planters.
