jmmccutc 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2004 this is what i did once in HS woodshop...i made a small pedestal with five dowle rods coming out of it at different angles...then i put the flies i liked on the dowle rods as they started to accumulate, by simply pushing the point into the wood... walnut, oak and maple look really nice...and keep your dowles to about 1/8 or 3/16 or it gets too hard to place the flies on the sticks... just my $.

PoPnBuG 0 Report post Posted December 9, 2004 I'm very interested in the 'liquid glass' experiment. Is is "reasonally available" to the general public? My initial concern is air bubbles around the dubbing or hackle, but I'd love to sink some flys into a display! Please, let us know more!
Frank G. Swarner III 0 Report post Posted December 9, 2004 Most of the time I use them for fishing, unless it's original purpose was for a "display." Chip
feathers 0 Report post Posted December 9, 2004 I did several tests with the liquid glass, today mounting a largemouth bass jumping out of the water near a log with a splash effect, here is what I found out... I used a rubbermaid ice cube tray, (walmart $2) and I placed in a dark cahill fly, I wet it first with part A of this 2 part resin. Worked great, when it was dried it popped out nicely... I also bought from a dollar general store, 3 tray pack for $1 and did the same thing without wetting the flies, well if air bubbles occur, grab a hair dryer and go back and forth over the glass and the air bubbles come up to the top, I then got a pin and popped the air bubbles and the liquid glass smoothed right out... I know I got into this, but my curiousity was up and I even made a splash effect with the air bubbles and had a air bubble push the fly up near the surface and just before this dried, I popped the air bubble and applied a propane torch and flowed the glass around the hook, (applied a very light heat) it tends to turn brown if touched with the propane torch...But this came out great, I am mounting browns after the holidays and going to do this procedure for these mounts, looks sooooo natural and realistic... feathers

flyfishingheaven 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 I have started my own shadow box. You know it will be worth millions someday (LOL). I like to keep a perfect tie from each pattern. This way when nothing seems to be going right I can look at the shadow box and remind myself that I ain't so bad.
feathers 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 Sure steel, I'll take some pics over the weekend, tomorrow I will be in the back building fleshing capes, so I'll bring the camera on Saturday...This is great...I can get some comments on the experiments... feathers
Graham 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2004 I've been poking around my boxes looking for fly's to send in for the contest. I have to say that I have never tied a perfect fly. There's something wrong with every one of em. They might be good for fishing but the discriminating eye will not miss crowded heads, misproportions, one wing longer than the other, etc. I'm gonna keep trying, maybe someday it'll happen, hopefully before the contest deadline but thats very unlikely even with 20 evenings left to practice. Lance Kekel 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2004 Perfect fly? won't happen. I tied one yesterday that I thought I'd send and I took a razor blade to it after looking at it again today. IF I ever do tie one it will get a pic taken and put my box to fish with to see if the fish think its oh so good, after all they're the most important judges! sandflyx 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2004 you might want to try "envirotex lite" to mount some flies, I use it to coat wood surf fishing lures. its also used to cover bar tops etc,, you can buy it at Michaels craft stores.
