This is the part of popper making I am always indecisive on. My "standard" is a marabou and flash tail with a wrapped body of Ice Chenille and some rubber legs. It works well and looks good, but the marabou gets heavier when wet. I have tried a few with all hackle tails, but wasn't the biggest fan of the finished product. I liked the mix I did a while back of bucktail and hackle for the tail with wrapped hackle body and rubber legs. I may start doing that more often.

Primarily splayed strung neck hackles. On some saltwater poppers I'll use bucktail. On smaller panfish poppers, I still like the hackles, but will often just use a clump of the hackle fibers stripped from the base of a larger feather. Except for saltwater poppers, I'll wrap a hackle behind the body, mostly a contrasting color or black. I'll wrap a hackle on salt poppers too sometimes, just to add a different appearance. I like to add a few strands of flash too! :)

Poppers sized 4 and larger, my favorite is neck hackle tail, palmered hackle skirt (almost always black) with silicone legs.

Popper sized 6, my favorite is same as above but I often opt for bunch of calftail or fox for the tail instead of the neck hackle and sometimes mix in some silicone as below.

Poppers sized 8 and smaller, my favorite is a wad of brushed out rayon floss or tuft of rabbit with silicone legs and the small estaz wrapped for a skirt with silicone legs.

For saltwater poppers it is either calftail, bucktail or a synthetic with some flash material. Normally no skirt or sometimes a few wraps of Estaz/Cactus Chenille.

I use calf tail as well as squirrel tail for my size 8 and 10 poppers. I also didnt like the look of the hackle for the tails. Might try it though on some of the bigger poppers, say size 4.

If I'm going for a minnow look I'll use something wiggly like marabou/rabbit with some kind of crystal flash or flashabou with a saddle hackle palmered skirt. If going for the bug look I usually just use strung saddle hackle; still use the palmered skirt, add rubber legs and possibly some flash. I've seen where several people are using estaz, I think I might try some for the skirt on some of my smaller poppers. Sounds like a good Idea.

Here is one of my most used bass poppers and my most used panfish popper. They are tailed withe the same stuff except on the panfish popper I use dry fly hackle. Also ill sometimes barr the legs with a marker on either size.

I use everything listed by the others so far. In addition to what has been listed, on some I use only a short clump of Krystal Flash; especially on my Pencil Poppers and some of my foam bugs. On some, I will add a collar of hackle in front of the Krystal Flash.
