Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted December 9, 2011 This is my Silicreek, a Thundercreek I tied on a one material (not including the thread) challenge from Hans Weilenmann over on the Fly Tyer Magazine forum and inspired by the Squirm tied by the most creative fly tier I know, Ted Cabali. I think it will be a good slow sinker for bass in the spring. Kirk Materials: Hook: Mustad R75S-9674 5XL streamer Tail: Furled Sili-Legs Body: Wrapped Sili-Legs Head: Pulled back Sili-Legs, Thundercreek style
FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted December 9, 2011 ^ Wow, you got me at one material. Kirk you have blurred the line between flyfishing and conventional jigs, foam on the back end would make it sit up. Deadly. Is there a 'one material challenge'? Great flies so far! Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted December 9, 2011 Hey Jam, my friend Ted is the one that turned me on to furling the sili legs for tails and claws on flies. He does some with bead and lead eyes that help turn them over and weedguards as well. He caught a 30 lb Jack Crevalle a couple years back on his original Squirm, which is not much unlike this one. The one material challenge was just a personal one that Hans had posted over on another site while relating a story about a one material fly swap that he was involved in. Thanks, Kirk

Kirk Dietrich 0 Report post Posted December 9, 2011 that's awesome! I gotta try that. Know where I can also see the Squirm fly? Thanks Pete. Below is a pic of one of Ted's Squirms except this one is tied with a bead head as opposed to his original that had bead chain. One thing about Ted, he rarely ties the same fly twice. Also, you can check out good little write up by Glenn "Catch" Cormier with some other examples that he ties. http://www.laflyfish.com/flies/sqwirm-worm.php Kirk
jhammer 0 Report post Posted December 9, 2011 Well, you all know me and how my flies mostly use the K.I.S.S. format. This month I've been tying up lots of Cypert Minnows. I usually tie them on a size 8 or 10 2X or 3X long hook. The ones pictured are tied on a 2X. They're a fairly simple tie and they work like dynamite on fish that eat small minnows. Particularly, white bass and crappie. I'll be sure to have plenty on hand for this spring when the crappie "wake up" and the white bass start running. All you need is a little bit of white or light gray chenille and some holographic mylar tubing. Did I mention they are tough as nails as well?

bluegill576 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2011 I tied up some tenaka flies today trying new things. Some of them didn't turn out to well, but they can go to the panfish to be devoured. I think the best was the one with the peacock swords inspired by a fly i saw on here a couple days ago, but can't remember who tied it at this moment.
