kentuckytroutbum 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2012 A friend of mine who is a professional trout guide in E. TN. told me not to expect to save any money over store bought flies. In fact he warned me that tying could become an addiction, and boy was he right. I can't stay away from fly shops with their walls displaying all kinds of tying materials. Don't want to know how much I have tied up in fly tying. Oh well, its a hobby that keeps me connected to fly fishing when I can't go stand in a stream! Ephemerella 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2012 $4-5 thousand, no doubt... especially with some classic salmon fly materials. Add to that tying furniture, hmm. Add to that all the fly tying books, again especially antique or reprint salmon fly tying books. Hmmm, maybe I'm up to $8K. Then of course I have maybe $1000 in fishing gear (cheap), $1500 for a set of (fishing) kayaks for the family...and 3 or so 4 day fishing trips up north each year, plus going to all the shows each winter, there's $1K each year for maybe 10 years... ...But way less than my wife has spent on horses for the past 30 years... -Peter
