J. Stockard Hooks

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any feedback on their hooks?

They are on sale right now and fairly cheap. Just thought I'd see if anyone had any reviews.

I've been using them for about a year. I really like them, they are sharp and the price, even when not on sale, is right. Limited number of styles, but they have the basics covered. B)

I have been using some of the curved-shank styles sizes 10 to 20. Very nice hooks and the price is good.

Ditto what the others have said. I like their heavy wet fly hooks for tying soft hackles, and their streamer hooks are good too.

I have probably gone through a couple of hundred J Stockard hooks and just got my first "bad" hook earlier this week. It was a very minor cosmetic defect on the shank just before the bend. I have seen worse more frequently from the big names. All in all, they are a good hook at a good price.

Quick question for those who've used these hooks; which works best for beadhead nymphs? The 225 or the 235? I'm looking to put in an order this weekend and try them out.

Thanks...

Either of those should work, but you might also look at the 720. The curved hook gives the flies tied on it a pleasing profile, at least to my eyes. :)

I tie pretty much all my subsurface flies on the 500. They have been great hooks. I have probably tied a couple of hundred flies using these hooks. They have served me very well.

The 2X Long is long enough for a beadhead, and the 720 is also a good hook for beadheads. I have been using some of their hooks for a couple of years now, and they have been fine. The price is more than competitive. I have tried some less expensive hooks and was not happy with them. I stick with Stockards, Montana Fly Co, and Daiichi hooks now. My last order to J Stockard was for 500 hooks, and I got another 500 from Montana Fly. These should last me all year, or at least until I start fishing.
