Mishaps in Fly Tying???

Recommended Posts

The other day I was tying a streamer and I wanted to make sure I got some hair in place and to stay in place I put some head cement on it. However, I didn't put the cap back on right away and incidentally I knocked over the bottle reaching for something else. I don't usually leave the cap off but I was going to use in again in a minute. So I had head cement, which is Lacquer based, all over the place and it was not fun to have to clean up right in the middle of my tie!

That sucks. I had a glue incident once but it didn't go on the desk.

I was applying some super glue to the thread to help hold a squirrel tail hair wing in place. The dried glue on the applicator tip caught on to the thread and plucked the thread like a guitar string flinging spatters of CA glue at me; a few micro spatters landed on my right eye and dried immediately. When I blinked, the dry glue scratched my eye. Had to wear an eye patch for a few days and take an antibiotic. That curtailed my tying for a few days and made driving a real P.I.T.A.! It sucked at the time but we laugh about it now (wife and kids).

Who woulda thunk tying flies was hazardous!?

One time i was tying a size 16 scud hook, once it was in my vise i turned around to get something, and when turned back my forearm hit the hook and left a bloody gash, it hurt like h*** but it didn't bleed for long. Mindyou my tying desk is an actual desk made of metal with a little shelf coming off the side i had my vise clamped right on the shelf, it wadn't goin anywhere.

just last week I was tying a few Rangley style streamers for a friends den he is inlaying them in the trim on his tv cabinet anyways I had glued the pairs of feathers for the wings and had laid them on wax paper to dry while I was getting ready to go to my doctor's appointment. Somehow I got my left arm unknown to me onto 3 pairs of feathers inadvertantly gluing them fast. The misshap went undescovered until my doctor was examining the strange growth on my left arm needless to say she found it quite amusing.

a couple years ago I was teaching my dad to tie a fly and he left the cap off of the head cement and turned the chair and hit it with his arm. It flew all over the table, floor, chair, and him.

i have spilled at least 2 bottles of head cement, and last year i was tying a bass fly on a 1/0 hook and i turned around to do something and then turned back around to finish tying the fly, and the hook point and barb went right into my thumb.

I drove a 2/0 gamakatsu hook half way through my hand when I was too lazy to get my hair packer and used my fingers instead. That was not cool.

I spend my days as a Safety Specialist for the government. I guess its "Do as I say, not as I do"

Every fall, I tie a lot of bonito/albacore files on circle hooks - you never have to worry about stabbing yourself with a circle, and it's easy to start getting careless. When the tunas have gone and I switch back to J-hooks for stripers, it usually takes a week or so before I relearn how to avoid stabbing myself. By then, the fingers on my right hand are usually full of holes. Happens every year.

I've spilled my share of head cements, paints & other liquids. Also had some incidents with CA glues, although not as serious as Kirk's. I wear glasses, so more likely to ruin them than get it in my eyes.

I've glued my fingers to popper bodies & other materials several times, and once glued them together. Took awhile to get them apart, carefully cutting with a razor blade. Fortunately it was fingers on my left hand, as I'm right handed, or they might still be stuck together! <_<

After doing my share of spilling, I decided to epoxy a small rare earth magnet to the bottom of my varnish bottle. I have another attached to the desk with double stick tape. It not only helps prevent spills, but it keeps me pretty consistent in putting the varnish back where it belongs on the desk.

one time i was using rainbow flash tinsel material and head cement at the same time and when i trimmed the tinsel, there was a tag end left so i decided to singe it off... well i forgot that when tinsel burns, it drips down in flame. i had left my cement bottle open and the flame drop landed in my head cement bottle, cauiong it to go into flames. luckily i had enough time to put it out before any real damage was done.

I once superglued my hand to my desk, that was awkward, to say the least, and I lost some skin on the the palm of my hand xD

I had an oops with Zap-A-Gap. I spilled some on my fingers and picked up a bunch of marabou feathers while reaching for a towel. I had some pink and fuzzy fingers for a while.
