ditz2 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2012 I ran onto a old fox fur that is a complete small fox made into some sort of fur collar. The fur is very full. The tail is so thick I couldn't get my finger thru the fur to the skin. I have never messed with fox. Is it worth $35. It appears to be great tying fur. Is there anything I should look for to determine the quality of the fur.
nightheron 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2012 Most fly shops sell fox tails for less than $35.00. If it is a particularly good specimen or an unusual color that meets a specific need then the price might be reasonable particularly since it sounds like the whole skin. Rough up the hair, if very little falls out it is probably still fine to tie with. I find it much cheaper to buy many exotic furs at vintage clothing stores than small often overpriced patches at fly shops.
narcodog 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2012 What you have is an item that was the cat's meow back in the day. $35.00 is a little high. I've seen them on Ebay for about $15.00. They have a huge amount of fur to use. Get a fur rake and go to town if you buy it. What color is it? I have one that was my Grandmothers that's black.
