novabass 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2012 I've Googled Blue Winged Olive and seen various patterns for this fly. Is there a common pattern for this and if so, what is it? If not, what would be a good pattern to use for a Blue Wing Olive?
Jaydub 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2012 "Blue-winged-olive" covers several species and there are hundreds of patterns. Any style of dun pattern with an olive body could be used. Here are a couple that are fairly easy and effective. BWO parachute Tail: dun hackle fibers Body: olive dubbing Wing post: white or gray zelon or similar Hackle: dun parachute style BWO sparkle dun Shuck: olive or rust zelon Body: olive dubbing Wing: deer hair When you have mastered those, try substituting a biot or quill for the body. Or try a split tail on the parachute etc.

I think you will see it both ways. Tomorrow I might type Blue wing olive or just BWO.

Soft-hackle 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2012 The blue winged olive is one of the most popular flies of all time. I'm speaking of the natural. Dressings-HA-- tons and tons of dressings for this natural. I also do not understand why everyone assumes that when someone asks for a dressing, they give the dry fly dressings. The fact of the matter is, this fly is very well represented by a wet fly. Double Olive Flymph Little Olive Flymph Here are two wingless wet flies that are super during olive hatches.
