CRRS 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2012 Hello I am new to Tying flies. Name is Craig and I live out here on the west coast, Northern California. I just bought a kit to get me started and here is the first fly that I tyed. I read that the Woolly Bugger was the best to start with. Will post more as I get more supplies to ty with. Great forum and glad to be a member.

flyderaght 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2012 excellent! I used a purple bugger as my go to fly for trout and it never failed me. problem was trying to find that exact purple was a bugger. I think I finally found it again in a craft shop as a feather boa-seriously. I would find the 6-10 patterns you use the most and tie those up. be prepared though, either the hit will be subtle or take your arm off. I have had good success for trout right at dusk or after marcwith a bugger on a floating line and no weight on it. the tactic works real well when they are targeting big caddis in late June. a friend caught a 10pd brown at night doing this. MIKE*A 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2012 Pretty good for a first! It will definitely catch fish! The hackle is the weak part of the fly, one thing I do to make it more durable is after I wind the hackle on, I take a small piece of copper wire (I use electrical wire, strip the insulation off and pull out one strand)and wind it the reverse direction thru the hackle from back to front to help hold the hackle together in case it breaks.....there are actually 2 schools of thought on this....I've always gone from back to front, but many people put the wire on the front of the fly and wind it to the rear thru the hackles....check you-tube for a video, there are dozens of them on wooly buggers, that will explain it better....Welcome aboard and Good Luck! firedad 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2012 Great job on your first fly. I didn't use wooly buggers in the first year of fly fishing so I didn't start tying them until a few months ago. I'm in Reno and fish mostly in California, where are you at in Northern California?
CRRS 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2012 Great job on your first fly. I didn't use wooly buggers in the first year of fly fishing so I didn't start tying them until a few months ago. I'm in Reno and fish mostly in California, where are you at in Northern California? I live about 1/2 mile from Clearlake. I can see the lake from my house. I have been coming up to Reno here a lot, Just had my back surgery there. That is why I took up tying flies. Gives me something to do while I recover. lykos33 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2012 Damn fine first fly..save it and compare it to the ones you will tie from here on out. In 5-10 years pull it out and see how much your tying abilities have changed..
