bowfin47 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2012 Lefty is 87 and goin' strong! For those of ya' going to Rich's show, do yourself an favor and bring a copy or two of one of the books from your library that Lefty has authored. He's great about signing 'em for ya! A few years ago Lefty gave my then 16 year old a casting lesson and then signed a book from my library to my son. It is one of my son's favorite possessions... If it wasn't soooo far from south Louisiana, I be there with Rich and Lefty! Y'all have fun! Bowfin47 PS While you're there, get Rich to show you his Shannon Streamer and Wonder Worm!! Those flies alone are worth whatever effort it takes for ya' to go to this show!
Valhalla 1 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2012 I just saw Lefty at the Fly Fishing Show in Lancaster a week and a half ago and he just amazed me. He was giving a demonstration and had a volunteer student. When Lefty wanted them to stop at a particular spot in the cast, his hand would shoot out and stop them cold...struck like a snake. He's going to have to age a bit to catch up to being 87.
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted February 29, 2012 Lefty is such an awesome fellow! Great sense of humor too! I've been fortunate enough to have met him several times, and he's always the same! I'm always amazed when he takes just the tip of a fly rod & casts almost an entire line! That is so cool! Many years ago, I was going to FL on vacation & needed some advise on fishing down there, someplace to go that would be suitable for fly fishing for bass. I called a friend of mine, Norm Bartlett, who I knew had fished down there a bit, and who just happens to be a close friend of Lefty's. Norm suggested I call Lefty & ask him about where I should go, since he spent a lot of time down there when he directed the MET Tournament in Miami. I thought, yeah, right, I'll just call Lefty! Norm gave me his phone number, and I called him! He talked to me about 30 minutes, just like we had been friends for years, and gave me a suggestion of where to fish & even told me who to contact down there for boat rentals. I thought what a great guy! He's fished all over the world with all types of famous people & he didn't mind talking to me! You don't find many folks like that! That was over 20 years ago, and I'll never forget it!
JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted February 29, 2012 I've read many of his books, and seen many videos, and I'm kicking myself for not getting to the Lancaster show because it's about 45 minutes away. I've not met him, but he is one person whom I've NEVER heard bad remarks about. I've also not read anything he's written which has proven to be anything less than completely accurate. His "Fly Fishing in Salt Water" was a real gem of a book when I lived near the Gulf Coast. His paragraphs about fly reels and drags, or lack thereof, is worth the price of the book--- basically superlon-unobtanium brakes which can stop a cargo jet are nice but totally unnecessary even for huge fish. Last year he was going to come to the last night of the "advanced" tying classes at BPS in Harrisburg, but he had to cancel. His book "My Life was This Big" is an excellent read. kentuckytroutbum 0 Report post Posted February 29, 2012 I've met Lefty and Bob Clouser at different fly expo/shows, and both are great guys. Clouser has a wicked sense of humor and had us rolling on the floor in laughter. Both are easy to talk with, and are willing to share information. Glad you had a great experience. I had some one-on-one "casting weighted flies" casting instruction from Bob Clouser (FOR FREE!!!) and agree completely. I don't know how these guys do it... if it was ME trying to teach a moron like ME, I'd have smacked me in the head fairly fast and got upset and left...
