michiganborn 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 My first post on the site, but I've been reading and looking around for a while, anyways here it goes. Who is the best online supplier for fly tying materials and equipment?
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 Welcome to this great site! Best is an opinion. We all have sources we use for different things, and since there is a wide range of patterns tied, there is likely a long list of suppliers. It will depend on what you need, as I'm sure there is no single source that has everything. I buy from several, including some Ebay sellers. The site sponsor, JStockard is excellent IMO. I've also purchased from Togens in Canada and have been treated very well. I'm sure others will give you some fine suggestions as well, you just have to browse thru them & see which ones work best for your needs.
notenuftoys 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 J Stockard is my primary. Best service and prices on the web. And I like to support a sponsor of this site. Occasionally J Stockard doesn't have something I need and I buy from somewhere else. But not often. However, for all my beads, I found an eBay seller who I really like. I've tried a variety of other places, and for the money, he has the best.
Aqueous1025 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 I'll third that one J Stockard all the way. I only outsource for things they do not carry, but you will find most of what you are looking for from them.
Harold Ray 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 I have 3 sites I visit regularly, and each gives great service. My favorite and the one where I have spent the most money over the years is J. Stockard in Connecticut. Second after Stockard is FlyTyersDungeon and the Mad Scientist from Montana. And third is Bear's Den Flyfishing Company from Maine. There are many others and many of them are very good, too, but these three are tops in my book in inventory, service, and just all-round nice people to deal with. I like each one and have always been treated very well, often dealing directly with the owner or a family member. Give them a try. Ray
shoebop 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 I would have to add FlyShack.com I use them quite a bit as well as J Stockard. So far they seem to have the best prices and they are quick.
mybadhabit 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 For hooks, it's hard to beat Allenflyfishing.com, Justin is easy to deal with, and the fly boxes are a great bonus. Blane
deeky 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 When it comes to materials, I think it depends on your personal preference and style of tying. I will make an order when I have a shopping list put together. Then I shop for whichever place has all of the items I am looking for. I think beginning tyers are shopping general enough that most places will have what you want. But get further into it and you will be looking for specific items that are a little more difficult to find, especially all in the same place. I've got the places listed here as well a few trusted others all in a folder in my Favorites. I start at the top with my shopping list in hand and note who has the most. Probably not the exact answer you were looking for, but advice - start a Favorites folder with all of the shops. Deeky
Kudu 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 I'm from the south. We like a little conversation when we buy "sumpin" and I'll give you who I like. Mad river outfitters in Ohio (ask for Lou) he is great. Little River Outfitters in Tennessee. I have also ordered from J Stockard and was pleased with the product however don't expect much of a conversation.
dogsnfish 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 I'm with Deeky, I get a list then shop around various sites. I try to get things from the NW because it gets here faster. flyfishusa is one of my favorites, and Anglers workshop has a good selection. I put in big orders with Stockard. for steelhead materials I use Red Shed.
H Dot Verseman 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 I go to so many different suppliers. Sometimes they are a general supplier, sometimes they are specific for certain items, some I just like supporting over large chains, rarely does price come into it. I haven't seen the major retailers be too far apart on prices, excluding sale items and discontinued stock. Two specific suppliers I will mention Tungsten Beads- RipLipsFishing.com I haven't found a better price for this many beads yet. Doubt one will pop up, but I won't be angry if you show me it, haha. Barbless, competition style hooks- www.troutlegend.com A forum, but click their store for the damned best price on hooks you'll find in this category. Cheaper than anywhere else on this style of hook by half. I have about 4 specialty suppliers- www.performanceflies.com http://shop.siman.cz/ I use these two the most, along with 1 in poland, and 1 in the uk. General Suppliers Jstockard, Wflies, theflyshop, caddisflyshop, tco, cabelas, hook and hackle Depends what I need and when I need it by.
packfancjh 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 J Stockard is good. I also use Casters Fly Shop in NC because of the free shipping. The Fly Shop is another good one.
Will K 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 I've had great service and luck from Bears Den and J Stockard. I'd seen adds in the past for J Stockard, and not checked it out, this site caused me to take a look and they have been great on the things I've ordered from them! Chase Creek 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2012 I can't say enough good things about both J Stockard and Whitetail Fly Tieing. Both have outstanding service. Whitetail is owned/run by Chris Helm (think deer hair). Take a look at his on-line catalogue - pretty impressive. If I can't find it at either of those places, I guess I don't need it.
