kentuckytroutbum 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2012 If you have to pick one then my opinion would be the 6 wt. I can toss everything from small dries to large streamers with my 6 wt and have caught everything from a 6' native brookie to a 26" steelhead. My 9 ft 6 wt rod, and mid-arbor reel are my "go to" rig, and will throw everything in my fly box. When I step on to the water, my 6 wt is in my hands. sniksoh 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2012 I fish for most of those species here in iowas lakes. I started with a 5 wt but eventually got an 8 wt redington predator. I by far like the 8 wt over the 5. it would be a little heavy for gills but I have a seperate 4 wt for that.
H.Champagne 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2012 The Flawless series by Diamondback is a slightly faster action rod. They have that "high modulus" feel that TFO lacks. I only fly fish for trout, so I throw either a 4 or a 5 weight. TFO's have a lag that I feel draws power from your cast. I bought one when a lot of the hype came around a few years ago and I was not impressed. The only reason I even tried a diamondback was because of a friend of mine. He has been a fly fishing guide for years and convinced me to check them out. Absolutely great rod, light, responsive, crisp bend, but soft enough to protect tippet and still cast like a cannon. I believe it is a better design of higher modulus graphite, but i'm no rod builder. $250.
