Insect Hatch report #1 - 3/11/12

Recommended Posts

Lake - Sunday 3/11,

This is my first report of hopefully many; suggestions, criticism, etc welcomed.

Midges and very small black stoneflies make up most of the insects seen around the lake.

Midge swarms appeared at about 4:30 on, and were abundant.

A stonefly pattern tied on a dry #18 hook will imitate the black flies well, and a midge or midge nymph pattern would likely be effective as well.

Recommended fly: http://www.flytyingforum.com/pattern12549.html

Next report will be during about the middle of next week, stay tuned!

If you would like additions to your posts put into a different thread, just let me know.

3/12/2012 - Owego Creek - Upstate NY, near the PA border.

Air temp 64 degrees (warm spell!!), water temp 45 degrees.

Tons of stone flies on the water and in the air. Not many hold-over fish (creek is stocked yearly) but did spy a couple of rises in the slow pools.
