cruzfly89 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2012 Has anybody ever tried the fly fishing line from fly tyers dungeon. It is pretty cheap and says it compares to fly fishing lines costing 70 bucks.
Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2012 They are an imported line from China. That doesn't make them bad though, just telling you what they are. I use to import the same line and fly boxes from China that FTD does and sell them. Pretty much they are the same type of line you find at Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas for $19.99. They are a decent line, I wouldn't say they compare to a top end line like Wonderline or GPX though. They are a little bit less supple then the higher end lines that's for sure, but a pretty good bargain for the $17.99 he charges for them. For the casual angler they are good. But my personal opinion is to spend a little extra on the line as it is the one piece of equipment that really has to perform well on every cast. cruzfly89 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2012 Thats what i figured. I can definitely tell a difference from the cheaper line as compared to the more expensive lines. I was hoping it was gonna be some kind of incredible buy. Thank you for your honesty i appreciate it
jhammer 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2012 I would recommend getting a good name brand line right out of the box. I've made the mistake of getting bargain lines from the big-chain outdoor stores. "It's made by so-and-so." I thought it was a good idea. Until I started casting. I don't advertise, but I stick with SA and Rio. Climax makes a decent line too. I slapped one on my 8wt and did a few practice casts and liked the results.

I really like the Orvis Wonderline and right now, if they have any left, you can get the gen III line for onl $29 which was $79 just a few months ago. I picked up one for each of my different weight rods.
troutguy 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2012 I have Rio, scientific anglers, but Cortland is my favorite. They have super customer service too.
cruzfly89 0 Report post Posted April 2, 2012 i have some of the orvis wonder line , and i also have the rio. My friend was actually the one asking me about the dungeons line, so i figured i would ask you guys cause i knew i would get honest feedback. Have any of you ever tried the sharkskin stuff by scientific angler? The owner of the local fly shop was talking about how good it is. I was thinking for 100 bucks it ought to be something special. A lot of times stuff is priced so high and is not any better than the cheaper stuff.
Gene L 0 Report post Posted April 2, 2012 I'm going to be contrarian here, but I personally can't tell the difference between a top end line and a cheaper line like you get from Academy Sports. They both cast quite well in my experience. But maybe that's because I'm not a great caster. How good does a line have to be to put a fly out there 40-50 feet, and what are the attributes of a high-end line?
Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted April 2, 2012 It's not the casting that it affects the most, it is the ease of mending, throwing "s-curves" into the cast itself to prevent drag, and other things that a nice supple line offers. The cheaper lines are "stiff" as compared to a better quality line. I can cast a cheap line just about as far as I can cast a higher dollar expensive line, but distance is not what suffers as much as the ease of mending, throwing curves into the cast, roll casting, line landing gentle on the surface etc etc...
